Can someone please tell me if there is a need, or a method, increase the oil pressure for the KA24DE? Is there a different spring for the pressure relief available? Do I shim the existing one? Should I even be worrying about this???

I haven't had any oil pressure problems, but the oil temp was a cause for concern. My oil temp pinned my 300 degree gauge at Mid Ohio last summer.
Are you running a cooler? And how much fuel pressure are you running?Quote:

Darin,
IF the pump is like the 12 valve engines pump, it is quite easy to shim it. IF your engine has been built a little bit "looser" you might experience a slight decrease in oil pressure.
What is your oil pressure at 3000 rpm? IS it within the factory spec? If not, and you are relatively certain that more bearing clearance has contributed to this, then try to shim it slightly. Place a couple small thin washers behind the spring. .030-.045" total thickness is probably a good place to start. You dont want to much shim as you will bind the spring up. That little bit will probably net around 10-12 psi at 3000 rpm.
I realize this may not be the politically correct, or the most trick way to boost oil pressure, but it will work.

bbp, did you get the oil temp resolved? Mine doesn't run nearly that high temps even here in Florida. I usually see 240-250 oil temps. (12 valve car)..If you need a hand, I'll email my temp fix. kinda lengthy and includes diagram..

a friend of mine's dad, stuck his head in my car and said, "where's your gauges? how do you know when somethings wrong?" "I laughed and said when it stops running!" later that week it stopped running, i promptly order some gauges for the spare motor.
no oil cooler yet. my oil temp sender is mounted in the pan, fwiw. never seemed to drop oil pressure
don't know what the fuel pressure is, it still a stock system.

So what should the pressure be? Our car seems to hang around 40psi at 4-6000 rpms. Is this too low? We haven't had the car on the track yet, but I have made several high speed passes on my deserted street.

I would expect at least 10psi per 1000 RPM. I may be wrong, but if I'm not getting at least 70 PSI, I'm going to think something is wrong.
Do you have a remote filter or oil cooler installed? If so, what line size are you running (-8, -10???).
This motor will be the first time I'm had an oil pressure guage installed. I should have it in and started in the next couple of weeks, so I'll let you know what my oil pressure turns out to be. I ended up installing a .032" shim under the pressure regulator spring...

FWIW, My car has about 25 lbs at hot idle. At 1000 rpm it starts to climb. At speed (4000-6200 rpm) it runs between 62 and 72psi. the pressure reads alomost identical whether i pick it up at the block (stock location) or at the filter adapter. I currently have the gauge picking up at the block and the big red "OH CRAP" light at the remote filter mount.I do have remote filter and a large oil cooler. -10 lines and fittings throughout.

I finally got the new engine fired up. After realizing that I had the oil pressure sending unit wired backwards (I was finding it difficult to believe that it had over 150psi of oil pressure!! http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/eek.gif ), the motor has about 60psi at a cold idle and pushes up to about 80-85 when reved over 1500RPM... I have about a .020" shim under what I believe is the factory pressure regulator spring....
For what it's worth... the motor sounds VERY nice... Can't wait to get it on the track...

Darin, Do you feel like this is a "safe pressure"? We finally found our problem. Of all things, a clogged oil filter!! Brand new Mobil 1 filter!! Have yet to cut into it to determine the true problem. Before locating this problem we added 2 shims that totaled about .060 We did this based on the info from some to start at .040. There was a washer/shim presently in the pump that measured .018 SO adding a .040 to the what I assumed to be a stock washer of .018 placed me at our .060 starting point. Now I think I have tooo much pressure!! After warm up, the pressure jumps to 90+ psi with very little reving (2000 rpm). We have yet to plumb our oil cooler which will be with 10an lines and will require a few 90 degree fittings. Soo before going to the trouble of removing the shims we will plumb the system and then check the pressure!! What do you think??

Well, before the car heads for the track, I'll be draining the 10w-30 oil that's in it and switching to synthetic racing oil, but to to answer your question, YES, what I'm seeing on the guage seems quite appropriate and I'm very happy with it. I only brought the oil up to about 130 degrees in the shop, since I don't have a fan on the car, but at about 3,000 RPM, it runs right about 80 psi., which is about where I'd like to see it. I'll have to update you further when I get it on the track.Quote:

I'm thinking that much above 80 pounds might be a bit much, but I'm certainly no expert... Perhaps Joe or someone might chime in and say something about that...

Just a thought, but I've heard of oil filters being blown out/off at 100psi. Never seen it/experienced myself.
The 10AN lines might help reduce pressure in the system, but you never know.

I've never experience that, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility. However, my RX-3SP with a GT-3 12A installed used to run around 110-115psi @ 10,000 RPM with regular Mazda oil filters without a problem...Quote:

Before you do any thing go read the Dave Williams Site about oil / oil pressure / and filters. If you don't learn something, I would be surprised. High Presure is not always necessary or wanted. Best filters are the no-bypass AC Delco racing ones for a small block chev. Fairly cheap and you can get them all over. DICK
