I run a ford 2.3 in ITB and was wondering what are the signs of a cracked head? Lately the number 3 plug is very wet with oil. There is now compression loss or overheating but there is some blue smoke that comes out of the exhaust from time to time. Could it be valve seal?

could easily be oil control rings or valve seals I'd say

I agree on the valve seals or rings. Most cracked heads are found on the turbo models as they run hotter and on engines that have been overheated due to lack of maintainence.

Thanks guys. I'll check and replace the seals as that can be done without removing the head.

Manny,

Best guess problem area is the stem seals, if you have them. Some Ford 2.3 did not use stem seals, just the stem/guide clearance (being cast iron, it works for a while).

Best procedure is to remove the head, and knurl the guides for proper clearance, check the seats for cracks (while it's off), and regrind seats and valves for best sealing.

Cure the leak, and improve performance for a more trouble free season!! What a deal.

Or run a hotter plug to deal with the oil.

Good racing,
