In my mismatch of VW engines. I have discovered that the Mk 3 pressure plate takes torque in the opposite rotation direction as does the Mk 2.. The "Sachs", Mk 2 PP loads the little strap in compression. That explains why they break the straps.
The Mk 3 loads the straps in tension, not breaking the straps. To use the Mk 3PP, in the mk 2 flywheel, you have to turn the OD to fit inside of the Mk2 wheel.

Also. The rear seal best fit is a 105x85x9/11. Not the 105x85x10.
You want the seal with the crank seal face inside of the seal housing, so that it does not rub on the back of the flywheel/ PP.

Interesting about the Mk3 pressure plate fitting Mk2 applications, with modifications.

There is another solution that doesn't require modifications, and I'm not talking about the Sachs "racing" pressure plate that band-aids the poor design with thicker straps. The Luk pressure plate has a different design, doesn't seem like it's susceptible to the same failure mode as the Sachs.

The luk pulls the strap the other way. The correct way.
The picured one also fits Mk 2 and Mk 3.

So where do you guys get the LUK pressure plates from? And do you get the ones for the 16V's for the added clamping pressure?

LUK, 16V application, works just fine. Use the disc that fits your trans.
Not sure if you need the 16v PP. Over the years most have been upgraded to the same specs,IMHO. MM

One of mine came in my 86 GTI, the other I found in a clutch kit on the shelf at Auto Zone. I just use the 8v ones.

No luck with Autozone, Advance Auto, O'Reily, or NAPA. Actually, I take that back, NAPA is the only one that actually had the kit marked as a LUK but its 5 days away at the main warehouse.
Eurosport Accessories has the LUK kit for $125 but also found it at Partsgeek for about $60. Too good to be true? Wrong one?

Not sure why the multi part #s for the 87. . They should all be the same, 8v application.
16V trans has the larger input shaft.Early Mk 3 and 16V are the same disc.
Looking at the pics all of the Luk PP turn the correct direction.
BTW I have never had a stock clutch, slip when the disc measured more than 7mm thic. regardless of the PP.
