As a part of this race weekend KVRG is offering a special event for all SCCA Improved Touring classes (including ITE and IT7), Spec 944 and Spec E30 organized into a 3 race Championship format. Below is an explanation of the event and the prize payouts. We are really excited about this format because we think it will give you an opportunity to enjoy some great racing all weekend long. The Heartland Challenge Championship for Improved Touring, Spec 944 and Spec E30


Summary: A Three Race points Championship that is conducted during a Regional/National weekend.

Eligible Classes:

All SCCA GCR IT classes, MiDiv Recognized IT classes (ITE, IT7), Spec 944, and Spec E30


Format:


Saturday AM: 20 minute Practice/Qualifying session to set the Race 1 Grid
Saturday PM Race 1: Regional Length race that sets the Grid for Race 2 and earns drivers Mid Am Pts
Sunday AM Race 2: Regional Length race that sets the Grid for Race 3
Sunday PM Race 3: Regional Length race to crown the Heartland Challenge Champions and earn drivers IT Tour Pts



Points Schedule for each Heartland Challenge race:


Race 1 and Race 2
First 10 points
Second 7 points
Third 5 points
Fourth 3 Points

Race 3
First 15 points
Second 7 points
Third 5 points
Fourth 3 Points

Determining a Champion:


Drivers with the highest points total in each class at the end of the weekend will be crowned the Heartland Challenge Champion in their class.


The winning driver must have finished 2 of the three races with one of those racing being Race #3. Note that a Finish means that the driver sees the checkered flag.
Ties will be broken based on most number of wins, 2nd place finishes, etc

To be included in the Championship a class must consist of at least 3 cars in two of the three races.

Awards:




KVRG Certificates* will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each class based on Championship results. No per race trophies will be awarded.


Payouts:


Class Champion = $100 KVRG Certificate*
Second in Class = $50 KVRG Certificate*
Third in Class = $25 KVRG Certificate*

*The KVRG Certificate may be applied to entry fees for the KVRG June 4/5 2011 Regional/National at Heartland Park, Topeka


Other Championship Series points:
Mid Am Points will be earned in the Saturday race (Race 1)


Mid Am IT Tour Points will be earned in the Sunday afternoon race (Race 3)
All Mid Am/MiDiv rules will be applied regarding Mid Am and IT Tour Points that are earned in Race 1 and Race 3.


Cars that fail to start or finish Race 1 or 2 or fail to run the Saturday AM qualifying session:


These cars will be gridded at the back of the field for the subsequent race in car number order. Meaning that unqualified car #2 is gridded ahead of unqualified car #4, etc. Drivers only wanting to run one day will not be excluded.

Fantastic! Yeah, I really looking forward to how this turns out.

Many years ago I ran in an IT support race during a Pro Spec Miata weekend at HPT. The IT guys had a qualifying race to set the grid fo the Pro IT race. It was way more fun than a qualifying session and there was a little strategy to it. Because not only did you need to win but you also wanted to put as many cars between your car and your competitors at the finish.

As everyone knows, the quickest car doesn't always win a race so things should get interesting and everyone has a shot.
