Importing a race car from Canada into the USA?

Does anybody here have experience importing a race car from Canada into the USA? If so, I'd like to here about your experience and any suggestions that you may have.

My situation: I found a race car in British Columbia that I might purchase. According to the NHTSA literature that I've read, purpose-built race cars (e.g., Formula Ford) can be imported permanently but race cars based on a production car (e.g., Honda Civic or BMW M3) can be imported only on a temporary basis (up to 5 years) and then need to be exported or destroyed. I suspect that I'm missing something here.

If you have a race only vehicle you can have it declared salvage or scrap and it can be imported as parts. It may never be titled or driven on public roads but it gets past the import mess.
