Hey all
Last weekend I was co-driving a very nice Nissan SER at Sebring built by Russel Mcmullen that we won the last enduro with at Daytona,
Russel ran it in practice and I set out to qualify the car was running great I was on my third lap and just radio'd in that I was going to turn it up a notch when I came out of corner was shifting nice and ez no speed shifting put it in fourth let out the clutch and it was like I was in neutral?????

No loud bang no grinding no metal on the drain plug???? Even with it on jack stands it feels like it goes into gear but doesn't?
All other gears work fine?
I'm a Saturn driver so this tranny is a little different for me any Ideas?
Thanks
O.B.

You have drive in the other gears--so it is not the diff or R&P. Hmmm...have no idea.

If it was a 240z I'd say shift fork pins. They bend and break and you lose 3rd/4th usually but I've had one work and one not before both go away. But i dunno what the SER tranny is like so I'm just kinda guessing.

There's nothing outstanding or weird on the RS5F32V transaxle; typical FWD 5-speed design. All gears, including 3rd and 4th, are on the same lay/mainshafts, and 3rd and 4th share the same shift fork and synchronizer hub. All gears are separate from the mainshaft, however 1st through 4th are integral to the input shaft, with only 5th being a separate part. The select forks and syncro hubs for 1/2 and 3/4 are on the mainshaft, and the forks/syncros for 5th are on the input shaft.

What you didn't specifically say is if you could get 5th gear. If you can select 5th gear but it also doesn't engage to the engine I'd suggest you broke the mainshaft or the input shaft between the 3rd and 4th gear. If you CAN select and engage 5th then I'd suggest a broken 4th gear or broken/misadjusted 3/4 fork or selector assembly.

You can also strip the splines off the gear where it engages the mainshaft or countershaft.

Honda CRX/Civic, no 5th gear.

Happened at 70 mph. I was coasting down a hill and went to get back into the gas to start back up hill when the engine freereved.

Note: Don't try running 88-91 CRX FD in a 92+ gearbox :)

Greg,
All the gears work except fourth. Russel even raced it during the enduro..with the exception of fourth. He just went from third to fifth.
The stripped gear WOW that could be a possibility...There was a little shavings on the drain plug but nothing major I mean just little fragments.
I just feel bad because it happened when I was driving...Thanks for all the input I will give the info to Russel.

Thanks for posting, O.B.

It is really weird. Everything seems just fine and dandy with the tranny, except for the fact that there is no drive in 4th gear.

Don't feel bad O.B. It probably would have happend anyway. It is not a big deal, it just gives me a reason to pull the engine and do a good cleaning in the bay. I may even get to paint it white so you can see in there too......

I will post up what I find when I tear down the gearbox. Oh yeah, I can adjust the diff too while I am in there.
