View Full Version : Rear gear options for different tracks

I run typical tracks such as Mid Ohio, Beaverun, and Nelson Ledges where the average lap speeds are within 10mph of each other. My 4.10 rear gears and tire sizes are, in general, optimized for these tracks.

If I make the jump to an ultra-fast track, such as Watkins Glen (short course) or Road America, where the speeds are at least 15 mph higher, is it a pretty good bet that I would have to swap out my rear gears for something taller?

I'm thinking that a change to something like 3.73 rears would be ideal. When I used to run these gears at my regular tracks, my top speeds would be a few mph faster, but my lap times would be a tick or two slower. Since one would spend more time at RA or WGI running at faster speeds over longer distances, taller gearing seems the wiser choice.

I know testing would tell the real story of what's required, but I was wondering if there are any general rules for gearing at the faster tracks.
