View Full Version : What tire will fit on a 6" wide wheel

Since the Mk1 MR2 is now an B car we have to find tires that will fit the 14x6 wheel. How does the 225/50/14 fit on there? doing some simple math the tire is 8.86" at it's widest point Will that fit on a 6" wide wheel? Or will I need to find some 205/55/14 tire that is alittle over 8" at it's widest point?

225 Hoosiers fit just fine... many (most?) of the "fast" ITB cars use 'em.

I have 14x6 wheels for my ITA honda. I run 205/55/14. I havent had any issues. I used to have 15x7 wheels but wanted a rim that was smaller. I trust them. Now im not sure about a 225 series on a 6 inch rim. One of my friends runs 235 series on his Honda...but he doesnt have a 6 inch rim. i think his are 8 inch. I would consider possibly a smaller width tire. Or go out there and try it with the 225's on

ITB and ITC Civic's run 225 Hoosiers on 13x6 and 14x6 wheels. ITB Golf's run 225's on 14x6.

Run them.

225s on my 6" rim, although I do wonder for tracks with long straights if 205s would be faster. I know, that wasn't your question. :rolleyes:

I have fit 225/50 Toyo RA1's and 225/50 Kumho V710's on my 14x6" rims with no problem.

We actually run 225s on the front and 205s on the back (ITB Golf, Hoosiers).

It really doesn't rotate any more or less than 225/50R14's did, but it may make it a bit more nimble.......

Having mounted a set of 225/50 15s on 6" wheels, all I can say is make sure your tire guy has a good machine, or is a sturdy guy. :026: They work fine, but they are a cast iron b***h to mount and dismount.

It's kind of odd feeling, really. The 225s never got up to temperature so they were always a big ball of pick-up. We're loading the 205s more but they're getting used more. The rear end actually feels like it has more stick with the narrower tires but the car is more (qualitatively) better balanced - less pushy - than it used to be. Maybe a better way to describe it is that the rear tires feel like they are "working" better with the 205s - more predictably - even if it didn't get rid of much steady-state understeer.

When he first tried the new package, Bowie had the same kind of trouble explaining it but it sounded like he was feeling the same thing.

I ran on 205s all the way 'round at a NASA race (PT, to save points) but it was hotter than hell and the track was slimy enough to make it impossible to tell seat-of-the-pants if it was better or worse.

Yep. I run 225 on a 6" rim no problemo. I don't know that it is gaining any grip on the 205 though. I do it for other reasons.

BTDT; I stuck with 225/45/15's when we moved the 924 from ITA to ITB, years ago. I pay my Hoosier guy to deal with mounting the tires now. :)

I've occasionally run 205's, but haven't done much in the way of serious back-to-back benchmarking vs the 225's.

What Kirk is describing sounds like what I've heard from some other ITB runners (Volvo guys, actually), and also talked to the Hoosier guys at the ARRC about: sometimes what actually happens is that, with either a taller sidewall or narrower tire, the way the tire contacts the road is improved over the extreme of jamming a 225 onto a 6" rim... Note that this is now beyond the standard consideration of tire pressures, but rather the way the sidewall stiffness comes into play. YMMV, however, and while some have found in some cars that it's faster due to better grip, others find, in different cars/setups, that it is no improvement in speed.

We ran 225/45r13s on the ITC Scirocco even ran em on 5.5 inch wheels

3 reasons really.
Lighter tire.
Lower car without effing up the suspension geometry even more.
To do it differently than the other guys, and maybe find something that works.

The 225 is a lower tire? I know it has a shorter sidewall, but the 225/50/14 should be the same or close to a 205/55/14

I'm running 205's all the way around on the new car. But I'm also running a spool and 15X6 wheels. The math says it's the faster way to go, but we'll see.:shrug:

Yep. If 13's were allowed on my ITA car, it certainly would've been something to look at. Lets you lower the car and maintain more suspension travel. Also gives additional gearing options since you can get 225/45 and 225/50 13's

In a pinch yes, but I just have a spare box that is right for 'short' tracks, and an 'A' box that is right for long tracks. Then I don't have to double tire inventory.
