Hello guys, I'm new to the site and club racing.

I have a quick question, is it legal (SCCA ITB rules) to convert a MK3 Golf from rear brake drums to discs?

Is a MK3 GTI (or Golf Sport) more desirable than a regular Golf?

Thanks, Edison

Check the spec line for the car in the GCR. If it lists both drum and disc, the answer to your question is yes, you can change from the drums to the discs through the update/backdate rule.

The back brakes don't matter much. I chose disks on my car for ease of maintenance. I know others that race with drums.

Other than the rear brakes, I don't think there's actually any difference between the GTI/Sport and the "basic" Golf - other than the fact that this the sporty versions were the 2-doors. I think? It's been a while since I've shopped for them.

Both drums and discs are listed in the ITCS so you can use either. If I were building a pure "sprint" car, I'd go with drums I think - after confirming that they are not heavier. Discs are less of a pain to work on but you can play with adjustment on drums so they are "zero drag."

Your biggest issue is going to be rust. MkIIIs have turned out to be corrosion buckets, in the rear floor and sills particularly. I'd start with a solid anything - 4-door, whatever - before I'd go to all of the trouble again, that we did with a non-sunroof 2-door Sport.

That's the floor of the shop you're looking at.

Thanks guys, the Golf Sport I'm looking at has a little bit of rust in the rear hatch. I guess I need to inspect the floor boards. Shoud I do it from under the car, or should I remove the carpet?

Both. Take a screwdriver with you and poke, poke, poke from underneath, and look from the top under the carpet.

Do you guys have access to the MK3 Golf/GTI dimensional specs? Looks like I'll be picking up a '95 Golf Sport on Monday and I want to check that the chasis is square.

Should be in the Body section of the Mk III Bentley manual.
