phantom grip lsd good or bad?

Total waste of money. Barely adequate for street use, useless on a track car.

It's name sums it up appropriately. However, it actually does work--it is not a scam--although for the time it takes to install, you might as well try and find a real diff.

Having used one (and later a quaife), I can say that there is nothing you will really notice about either of them (other than lap times). A dramatic seat in the pants kicker diff is, of course, the locker or 220V model.

If you are just getting in, have no money, know how to do all the work yourself, have a spare trans for when you do have the money to get the right one, it is better than nothing. I ran one for 2 years. Change the trans oil a couple times a year. For an additional $300 you can at least get an OPM unit.

Phantom Slip, works so good you never knew it was there!

OBX for $360 or OPM.

I've install 30 OBX's for street abuse, no failures yet.

There are 4 slightly different versions, the first three require "creative" shimming.

Right now I have a 90-91 Si tranny that had a PSlip installed, the diff pin still wore thru causing an explosion or parts. But........the PSlip kept the diff guts in place so very little case damage. Just from street driving, not on and kind of track!

I'm on 20,000 miles with a phantom grip in my dual duty street /autox GTI. Having never had an LSD in a semi-powerful fwd it is soooo nice to have two tires turning under power. Last week was the first autox event with it and I was all smiles. Now for the negative. i'm told I should expect the Phantom to leave me with a blown up diff in another 30,000 miles or so which will suck. Due to the muich harder material than the internal componenets the rub against self machining is inevtiable. I did not know this when buying it or I would have gone a different direction. You also have to hand grind the spider gears to make it fit right. my tranny gyu was flaming pissed off at me for buying such a poor fitting product. BUY the OMP!

Some might dispute this, but the gearbox, with the proper gears and a good LSD will make the car handle much better than you think, and it will make the car easier to drive. Therefore instead of wondering if it was you or the car that just put you off course or missing the apex, you can focus on you instead of an ill handling gearbox.

If you intend to run the same car for a few seasons, than a good final drive and a Quaiffe are well worth the investment.
