can anyone explain to me how to wire an MSD box to work with the stock distributor, I don't want to run a crank trigger, my problem is that on my 84 GTI running the stock ignition which consists of the distributor, coil and ignition module I don't have a rev limitier that is the reason I wanted to run an msd box, I'm running webers and fixed timing on the distributor.

It's simple, the signal wire out of the distributor hooks up to the white points input on the MSD. Other than that follow MSD's instructions concerning power and ground and the coil. Hope this helps.

In my GTI I ran just the MSD rev limiter without their ignition box:

The one I had was an older model/ Worked great for me.

If your goal is to force a shift in the proper rev range, you could just get a shift light. That is unless you think you need the discipline of the limiters silent hand. I did.,

Thanks, but which is the signal wire from the distributor? and also by using the msd box I eliminate the ignition module?

Bold Writing is the wiring on the MSD unit.

-Thick Red – To battery Positive(+) Terminal
-Thick Black – Ground, to battery or good ground source
-Orange – Positive(+) Terminal on Ignition Coil
-Thin Black – Negative(-) Terminal on Ignition Coil
-White – Connect it to the Thick Green Wire on your Ignition Control Module
-Thin Red – To switched 12v (ignition switch)
-Back of MSD – goes to your tach

FYI, in my diagram of the MSD 6AL, the only wires that connect to the coil are the ORANGE and BLACK wires.

The RED and WHITE wires are attached to "standoffs" or plastic extensions with no connection to the coil.

Actually you don't need the factory module but you CAN use it

I was always told that you need the control module because the signal from the distributor is a different wave form than that of the MSD so you need the control module as it converts it.

Ok, the center wire coming out of the hall switch on the distributor is the signal. Hook that wire to the white (points) trigger wire on the MSD. The right side wire on the hall switch is B+ (switched)
and the left side is ground. That's it.

That would work but many years ago, Walt Puckett only used the hall effect sensor with a MSD, and the hall effect sensors seemed to have a short life span. I believe he finally installed the control module and did not have any subsequent problems with the hall effect sensors.
