Does anybody know if somebody makes a straight cut gearkit for the 020 box?

They are available. Not sure if they're an off-the-shelf product anymore though. IIRC Quaife used to sell a couple of different sets. I'm sure you can get them made from Taylor or Housman. I'd check the Prod and GT sites, as well as www.vwvortex.com

You might also work back to Great Britain, to the rally biz.

If you find one, let me know :)

Ideally looking for dog engagement, but SC would be a start. (prod application) I've seen them for the cable shift transmissions, but I thought that would be too much hassle.

There are sources that will put a dog box (I want to say a Hewland, but don't recall right now) in an 020 case. Mucho expensivo.

Very expensive. When we were looking for the Prod car, it was going to be $3-7000 to get straight cut gears (lower end $) or dogring in the 020 gearbox, with the caveat that it could be more. No one would give us a real price.

Didn't seem feasible (or reasonable), so we didn't go there.

This guy found a pretty sweet one.

Based on just how that car looks, I'd say his gearbox is out of our league. Unless, of course, Chris decides to be a "real" prod driver and only do four national starts a year, finish three, and then go the Runoffs with his sweet new gearbox. Maybe those 3 extra weekends (plus half of his regional schedule---or more) and he could afford it.

Cool, but not a 020 box :(

That looked like a cable shift sequential box

Like Leslie said, the box is only about 4x what I have in the entire car.

Is it possible to build a $4k car around a $18k gearbox?

As soon as I win the lottery

Colotti Transmissions in Italy builds them, but again they are quite expensive. Here is a response from the owner of the company to my inquiry of pricing...

I thought it was cool that Paolo, the owner responded. Kinda makes you realize that in Italy it can still be a one man shop!

Here is the web link.

Kraftswerks in Cali is run by a south african guy that has been building vw race trannies for years. I had trouble locating his website which is realy a great resource as it has all the gear ratios and combinations of final drives including the cars and years that they came in. Here's what I was able to dig up for you on them.

This is the guy who doesn't return phone calls and when you do get in touch with him, he doesn't really do what he claims. Been there, done that.

Thanks guys for all the info, I have another question, anybody running and electromotive ignition on their 16V, I need to make the plug wires to be able to plug them to the coil packs, anybody know where I can get the wire terminals for the 16v plug end, or if somebody sells the wires alllready make.

Sorry to hear the Kraftswerx guy is flaky. I've used his index of gear ratios and models for a number of tranny builds....

Check out JEGS for the plug goodies a friend just converted his VR6 over to MSD and got all the goodies from them. Pretty cheap if I'm not mistaken. I have a set of Nology 16v wires that need one of the plug ends fixed that you could have for the cost of shipping if you want. [email protected]
