I was going to go through and change all the fluids on my car before the Oct. school. When Travis owned it he was running some spectro oil from CT. that is impossible to get. Anybody have some good recommendations for what to run in the 1.8? What weights work best? I've never owned an older vw, I had a 16valve GTI but can't remember what I ran in it for the street.

Thanks

Kendall GT1 dino version 20w-50 or Synthetic, or RedLine straight 30w.

Can't go wrong with synthetic. I rented the car a couple of years ago, and water temp went to 240 after he lost the fan belt. Came off the track, let the motor cool for a couple of hours, replaced the belt and the alternator (that was the culprit) and didn't have a lick of problem. Didn't loose the head gasket, warp the head, or spin any bearings. This was with the Kendall Synthetic.

Great stuff.

There is a good discussion on oils over on the prod board.

The current Kendall Oil is not the same as the old green oil. The Kendall brand was sold off and has not been the same since. Here is the maker of the old Kendall Green oil.

I ran 20w50 last year, both AMS and Mobil 1. This year I been running 10W40 and the engines willing to spin up a lot better. Oil pressure is good and last oil sample I sent out came back with the same numbers as the 20w50. Oil temps are about the same in the 220 range in warmer weather, 210 in cooler.

I ran 0W30 synthetic in my car, and it still had almost 100 psi of oil pressure when cold. Still idled at @ 35 psi and ran 50-60 psi under race conditions.

Anyone run valvoline VR1 20W50 "racing oil"? I'm using redline, but I saw it at autozone for $4 a quart. Just curious if it's just another regular street oil with a "racing oil" sticker.

I use the VR1 20W50 to break in a new motor because of the high zinc, but then switch to synthetic.

I use the valvoline VR1 20W50 "racing oil" and have no problems, I like it.
