And the coolest part? There is a Laser signed up for ITA!! Can't wait to see it! We certainly have a cross section of cars! I see 10 different models!! Plus, three of them are domestics!! That's what IT racing is all about!!

Lug nuts was the begining of the post car inspection. Remember no third gear too so the tranny got a look see - still in progress. The bigger issue - I was down a quart plus a little of oil and we found a small amount of copper shavings in the oil filter upon inspection - changing the rods and mains - requires a litttle more than "slap em in" and hope.

I might ask Anthony S if Lorenzo is intested in renting the CRX - short of that I will not know until next Friday.

Looking at the field, it's a race I do not want to miss.

Joe - I pictured you and me drafting into Big Bend - come on partner  .

Life is good. The car is off jackstands and the only thing left to do is put on the brake ducts.

Breault (if he doesn't get in a fight before the race....)

Well, at this point I'd be happy with even that!

I ran some laps to heat cycle some sticker Hoosiers and as I turned into the paddock, it died. I worked on it all afternoon, and eliminated some stuff, and got it to run for 5 seconds. Then I pushed it to the trailer, and spent the next hour and a half pulling the winch apart to undo the two wraps that somehow got around the gears, just to get it IN the trailer. Where it now sits, awaiting my attention, which it will get in 50 seconds....

Still planning on running, but......

Officially, the plan is for 7 PM.

Marianne plans to open registration at about 3ish if she can, but that does not mean that you can get in.

That is up to the track and only the track.

She is also a race chair for the weekend in addition to being the registrar, so she might just be a bit busy right then.

If you POLITELY let the flaggers at west bend know you are there (and only ONE person needs to do it, not each and every one of you) they will pass the word along to her. It may take her a bit of time to finish up whatever errand she is doing and get up to registration. It's not like she is sitting in a beach chair up on the hill sunning herself.

The last thing I heard before I left was the lotus 7 driver was released and on his way back to the track.
The FP lotus started at the back and had passed a couple of cars. As he entered 5 the left rear axle sheared and the wheel fell off. He spun In the middle of the track and was hit in the left door by the white Miata. The Miata really had nowhere to go. The Miata really climbed all over the little lotus. Fortunately the lotus is (was) right hand drive. The blue Miata made it around on the left and the Rx7 tried to do the same but the wreck beat the rx7 to the hole and the rx7 just tapped the white Miata. No damage to the RX7 and he was able to find reverse and continue.
As this was at the rear of the pack, early in the race the workers had a little time to respond. When the pack came back around there was a highly visible waving yellow at 5 and the leaders did a great job of making it thru the carnage. 20 cars or so made it through the incident with no problem however the idiot in the silver Honda spun into the incident under the waving yellow. It was not a hard hit, the Honda was flat towed in, and I am told that he did not contribute to any injuries but I was highly disappointed in this guy’s judgment.
At this point the Red flag came out.
On a lighter not I am told that a letter has been sent to Topeka suggesting all cars be converted to Right Hand Drive as we now have anecdotal evidence that it is safer.

The Lotus started in 8th, not exactly in the back.
[/b]
Hmm I thought he started at the rear, if I am mistaken I am sorry

Accident happened in turn 4, the right hander.
[/b]
station 4 is the left hander, station 5, where this happened is the right hander leading on to no name

The white Miata, who incidentally, had a great start, spun trying to avoid the carnage. Viglioti, just in front of me, in his blue Honda, and I snuck thru just as the carnage was taking place.
[/b]
hmm that is inconsistent with the vidio from the rx7, not that it is a real big deal. I place no blame on the white Miata who contacted the lotus, he did the best he could. there was one blue car, a miata i think that passed the rx7 in the left hander that squezed thru and the the rx7 got cought up in it. I can not say who got thru after that but I thought Dom was well ahead of the incident.

Where do I start?

Saturday was an up and down day for me. I have not driven LRP in 3 years and have a lot of new parts on the car. Needless to say I was absolutely horrendous in qualifying! The car was pushing very badly and I needed to loosen it up big time.

After the qual session I was pretty mad with myself....

The race came and so did the threat of rain, which made me nervious as I do not currently have rain tires. The pressure just kept adding up.... The race came and went and for the most part it was uninventful. I had fun racing some ITB and ITS cars, but I was most happy with getting my lap times down 3 seconds from Qual.

Overall a good stepping stone for July 4th race back at LRP.

A couple of funny things over the weekend.

1. I had 3 individuals, who are on this message board, come to me and say man you get beat up a lot on the boards. I noticed your name right away! LOL

2. I did not even come close to my lap time predictions, so its time to check my ego at the door.

3. I am WAY too polite on the track. I mean, watching my incar video and I am way too easy.

Anyone want a good laugh? I am going to upload my video on youtube for all to giggle.

Oh and to add insult to injury, I showed the video to my wife and even she was laughing. Her comment was "You suck in the uphill"

3. Haven't seen the video but, looked pretty good hangin tough on the outside of big bend.

Anyone have more information on the driver of the lotus 7? I was the driver of the white Miata who hit him and can say it was frightening to realize how vulnerable he looked sitting in that car when I knew I was going to hit him.

I saw him spin and had quickly slowed and judged the evasive move to avoid him when someone hit me hard in the rear and launched me into him. I did feel the front of the car come up and had visions of having gone up on top if him.

I was quite shocked and surprised that with a saftey worker attending the Lotus 7 driver (who was obviously out cold) that race control did not have a double yellow out, and even more surprised to getting hit again as I was sitting in the car waiting for it to be safe to unbuckle. That corner worker could have been seriously injured trying to attend to and get medical assistance to the accident scene.

I now have a real appreciation for all the lectures and instruction on staying buclked up until instructed to get out of the car.

In case you missed Jim, the Chief Steward announced at the end that the lotus drive was on his way back to the track from the hospital. That was really great news. I don’t know if you saw Lou’s video but he was directly behind you at the point of impact at it was amazing how high the nose of your car got. This was not your fault.
As for a full course yellow vs. a the waving yellows that were up the entire field minus one Honda driver found that to be sufficient warning. The flags were very visible.

I hope I don't sound critical, because I am not. The corner worker had been at the drivers side for a good 30 to 40 seconds when the second incident occured, I was very concerned for his safety. I am sure you realize that 30 to 45 seconds seemed alot longer sitting in the car.

It is no fun loosing a new car (or any car for that matter), but the fact that everyone is OK is much more important.

The silver Honda showed very poor judgement, as I watched it all from the hill. (In hindsight, I guess I'm actually glad my motor chose Tuesday to blow, as this race wasn't much fun, LOL) Glad the driver is OK. One one hand, thankfully the car was British, and RHD, on the other, if the darn thing wasn't British, maybe the wheel would have stayed attached!

On an interesting sidenote, if I am speculating correctly, Mr Bettencourts car didn't start in grid without a bump start. And if he has no fan on the car, he could not leave it idling during the black flag all in the pits. IF the race had restarted, there was a chance he might not have been able to rejoin without outside assistance, which means that....Richie would have won.

But, the race was never restarted, so that bullet was dodged.

This is all speculation, as I don't know if he has a fan or not, and if the no start condition fixed itself when running.

Joe made some strong moves, esp on the start. And a tip of the hat to Dr Bro, who really stepped up and got into the 4s. Nice job!

My car has a wierd hot-start problem but this wasn't it. My alternator light wasn't on but it was starting to 'glow' and the car might have been running on battery alone. It didn't want to idle and I was very concerned I would finish. Above 3K rpm it was fine. I have both OEM fans in the car so I never had to shut her down while under red or under black in the pits. I would have been fine for a restart because I never shut the car off. The car was just coming in and ready to rock and roll when the incident stopped action.I am guessing a low 1:02 was in the cards under the warmer conditions.

Glad all are ok. I don't mind losing track time in the name of safty because one day that will be me who needs to be 'saved'.

Big ups to the Doc...it's amazing how much HP you can find in the corners when you get a real set-up!

No, the time factor does not apply for half the race unless it is a timed race ONLY, like the 3 hours race for RAL weekend, which would be official after 1.5 hours in the event of it being stopped (like for a massive thunder storm.)

Red Flag was at just under 9 minutes. IIRC, 11m:10s remaining on my clock (and the Starter keeps the official time.) I remember commenting to the other starters that it wasn't an official race.

The race is only shortened IF it goes over the 20 minute mark AND the leader hasn't started his last lap. If the leader crosses S/F with just one second remaining on the clock, the everyone gets another full lap. The final lap has to be started before the time limit. This actually happens a lot more than you would think.

When there is a red flag, the race is also backed off to the last completed lap, so officially, only 5 laps were completed, 2 short of half distance.

Anyone with the official results that were printed out have an official 'time of race' or 'total time' for us? I would have thought the official results would have mentioned something about nothing counting and no legal finishers should that have been the case...and the obvious question comes up, if there are no winners, no trophies and no points - do we get a refund? Doubt it.

For the record, we did get trophies...and I am 99% sure the results showed an official finishing order with a winner and fast lap. I just don't look at them for irregularities...

Ray, here is what happened from my seat:

1. local yellow

2. fcy

3. red flag

4. black flag all

5. 1 minute to go from pit lane

6. 'shut them down' suggestion from pit lane workers

7. chequered flag while in pit lane at about the 15 minute mark

8. impound top 3

9. top 3 weighed and released

10. official results posted with finishing order

11. Trophies handed out

The race was not restarted due to cleanup that needed to be done to keep the schedule moving. Group 4 (SM - ITA was in G2) had no FCY's, yet was inexplicable shortened to 10 laps. Litterally, when the 5 lap to go countdown on the scoreboard hit, the chequered came out and the numbers went 5-4-3-2-1 in 2 seconds. The rest of the races were 15 laps.

6.7.5. Shortened Races
A. If a race is stopped at less than fifty (50) percent of it’s scheduled time or distance and is not restarted, it shall be considered incomplete. Championship points shall not be awarded, and organizers shall not be required to distribute trophies or other awards.

"SHALL NOT BE REQUIRED". e.g. they may do it, but don't have to. But, no points (and no credit for running a race on your license.)

The clock is stopped when the red flag is called for.

If the results put out by T&S have some other time, then they are in error. T&S does not keep the official time for the race, Start does.

I was pretty disappointed to only get 3 laps of racing; I felt a little ripped off. However, I really feel bad for the driver of the 7 car and I'm glad we were red flagged for the sake of the workers and drivers involved in the wreck. Just seems like we had plenty of time for a restart. If I remember correctly, by the end of the day, all the race groups were done by approx. 5:15. BWDIK, I'm new to all of this. I looked quickly in the GCR, but didn't see anything about refunds or the lack thereof. Are there any rules about that, especially if the race is considered incomplete?

On a positive note, it was so nice to have the workers bring out nice cold waters for all the drivers as we waited in pit lane :happy204:

The rules say that you must qualify OR start to get credit toward double points. So interestingly, according to Dave, we could all get credit for 'attending' for the NARRC points chase, yet at the same time, get no offical start for licensing purposes.

Andy - I am looking at the sheet and there is no mention of "official time". There are other referrences to time but no referrence to racing time.

RKramden
06-17-2007, 10:33 PM
Andy,

T&S cannot provide the time requirements for Start on a "timely" basis. Starters have to do this for themselves. We don't time the laps (T&S does that), but we do keep the time for the length of the sessions. If we had to ask T&S for an "official time", we would need to call the stewards on the F&C radio, have them ask T&S on the Race Administration radio, and then get an answer back via the reverse path. Way to inaccurate.

The starter has to display the checkered flag on the correct lap, and it can be a real guessing game if the time limit is being reached and the distance hasn't been covered. More than once, the decision to checker a race on a given lap based on time has come down to a matter of seconds (e.g. less than 1 or 2 seconds).

At tracks like NHIS, the timing line is in front of the timing building in turn 4, and the T&S people don't really know when the race starts and ends. Officially, the first lap starts when you cross the S/F line and ends at the timing line. Hence the line in the supps that the first lap will not be used for setting fastest lap or track records. At that track, the Starter also scores the final lap for T&S and we call T&S to tell them if there were any position changes between the timing loop and the S/F line.

At Lime Rock, the timing loop isn't at the S/F line either, but it is only a few ( less than 12) feet past the line so the error is small. However, there have been times where the first car to the S/F line was not the first car to be picked up by the timing loop. (Hint: Keep your transponder as near the front of the car as you can...)

As far as when the race was red flagged, the timing system MAY have the time fairly close, but it is a case of them being told that race was stopped and then the computer system being "adjusted" to reflect what is needed. (Yes, I spent a year in T&S running one of those computers when I had bad knees). Start stops a clock when the Steward calls for the red flag. (I say "A" clock, because we normally have three or four clocks running. If there is a red or black flag all, we stop one and keep another going.)

As far as the list of required equipment goes, you will find there are lots of useless things (equipment) required, and lots of things that are required to do the job that are not listed. The GCR isn't "up to date", and hasn't been for years. (see 5.5 for the list for each flag station.) Any request to the CRB to have those parts of it updated falls on deaf ears. For example, you may note that there is no mention of a number board, a "sound" board, a "1" sign, a "pace car" sign, an "ALL" sign for "Black flag all", or the requirements that we have pencils (to do lap charts), paper, a clip board or two, or any of the dozens of other things needed to do the job. The list is neither all inclusive or exclusive.

Of course, at a drivers school, I time sessions with my sundial. B)

I got in touch with my results. No total time listed on there like on the MyLaps format.

So now we enter the GCR. In both the Black Flag All and Red Flag sections, it says drivers shall proceed directly to the pits after being 'released' by an official. In this case it was the Pace Car who released me. We were then brought down Pit Lane and held there. While not official by any means, my crew guy (who was standing next to the wall telling me what was going on) said they called the race because the 20 minutes was up.

The officals most certainly had the intention of getting us back out there. They even gave us the one minute sign before they told us to shut down in Pit Lane. We COULD have circled the track under double yellow/Pace Car control for the 20 minutes/10+laps for sure...

What is the right thing to do?

What SHOULD the official results said? No positions, no times? I have a feeling T&S and the Chief Steward havn't even thought this would come up. No mention of it not being an official race was passed along. Should it have been?

(on edit: Supps say on black flag cars are to report to 'pit center')

The decision to checker the race after the red came out was made with about 5 or 6 minutes on the running clock (e.g. the one we kept running, not the one we stopped when the red was called for.)

I must admit, I wondered why the race wasn't restarted after the cleanup. But, it wasn't my call, and not something for me to question. You need to ask the Assistant Chief Steward who was actually running that race why he made that choice.

I will bet that his attention was correctly focused on more important issues at that moment.

Well, if cleanup was complete then the ACS knew that when you did...so the decision was made knowingly to shorten our race. I don't think the cleanup was done as no cars had come off track while we were on pit lane. I think they knew they COULDN'T get it cleaned up in time so they finished us because time was running out.

Very cool I was going to call you about that this week. Yes as Andy stated I have been running them since day one this year. I also turned my best lap ever at LRP this weekend in qual 1:03.4.

I was so focused on Rick B's bumper and trying to put a move on him, I almost drove into the wreck - very close - I did miss the flags - my bad. Great video!

I just got off the phone with the Lotus driver. He is a very, very lucky guy. If this was a left hand drive car, he probably would not have made it.

He doesn't remember much, was unconscious for a long time. Very sore, has some headaches.....But already thinking about how to get the car fixed.......Typical dumb ass racer.......

I told him to get rid of the British cars.............

normal procedure is to have the wreckers and tilt bed exit the track at west bend, if that will be the fastest way off the track.

So they either didn't get it cleaned up in time or they did and didn't allow us to go back out. My information is that the race clock ran out of time.

Excellent news Jeff!

Was a nice today to be at Limerick. I checked out a bunch of cars collecting ideas. I saw the poster of the Palmer track, looks nice!. I saw Flatout get jump started on false grid....someone shouted "a kink the in armor Andy?"...Not really I supposed as by the Red Flag he had a comfortable gap.

That Lotus started from pit lane. He entered the false grid during the warm up lap. As he pasted from false grid into pit lane, he waved to the workers. The women whom bring the cars off false grid mentioned what a nice guy he is as he made is way down the pit lane. I am glad to hear that he is doing well. His result could have been much worse. I saw the car while it was in the tech area. The cage was fairly distorted. Good thing he was on the right side or he would have received a blow to the rib cage from the horizontal bar. It looked like it moved about 12" at its worst. Fortunate that he was not upside down as the vertical hoop did not look substantial. Glad the driver will heal, not sure about the car though. Under the hood showed lots of stress in the welds.

I understand that the State Police do an investigation. Does the SCCA do an investigation and review of the performance of the safety features of the car and issue a report?

Not a report per se' that I am aware of, but, the car is towed to impound, and the tech inspectors go over it and inspect it for damage. Damage is noted in the logbook, and the car will require reinspection before it is allowed to take to the track again.

I observed part of the inpsection process, and there was a ripple in the drivetrain tunnel, but other than that, the driver compartment seemed intact. It felt alot better to have heard his condition was goood when looking at the car.

Seems like an opportunity for the inspectors to add to a database of cage and saftey equipment performance for future refinements.

Just watched some of your video. 4th gear will be fine once you get more comfortable with going into the uphill. I also noticed you lift several times preceeding no name. I did like how you were aware of other cars beside you. I'll do my best to chase you down on the 4th if my car is survives tomorrows test day. B)

Hello,
My Name is Christopher (KIP) Moncrief. I am the driver of the Silver Honda CRX that was involved in Saturday’s accident.
I would like to apologize deeply for my actions over the weekend. I didn’t see the yellow until I was on top of the incident which was my first mistake. I looked for a place to go and saw the corner worker already attending to the Lotus driver on the inside of the track and that is when I locked it up and spun to the left side of the miata. Seeing as multiple cars had made it through this corner without adding to the incident my late entry has no excuse but poor judgment as was stated earlier. Please except my honest apology for the incident.
I am new to this group and I would like you all to feel comfortable racing with me. I made a big mistake and you can be sure that I have been replaying this chain of events over in my head for the past couple of days and all I can say is that I am thankful that every one is ok. I will be back on the 4th to gain more experience and prove to you all that I can race in this group.
Thank you for your time,

Kip Moncrief

Great Post Kip! I would like to tell the rest of the group that you were very stand-up and sincere in the paddock area after the incident and that was important to me as I was the car you hit.

You were only responsible for one of the three corners of my car that got damage so I will send you 33% of the bill :D

Just joking I know you have your own problems to fix. Like they say at every NASCAR event " it was just one of those racing things"

Good luck on the 4th. Wish I could be there.

Jim,
On a side note, what kind of HNS device were you wearing (if any)? Do you think it did it's job?

Just curious to see how they stand up to real live situations.

Glad you're OK, hope the car is repairable!!

Jeff

I wear a Hahn's device and yes I think it did the job. I was hit in the rear twice and obviously had a hard frontend crash and I feel fine. I wasn'e sore the day after either. At 61 years old it doesnt take much to make one lame

We have ordered parts and will repair the car. It will be back :P
