Help! Autometer mechanical water temp gauge install

Anyone have any pics or a write up of how them plumbed in the temp probe for the mechanical water temp gauge setup? I've seen this done several times, usually by putting a tee fitting in the heater core lines and then installing the probe in the tee. Wasn't sure if it's better to remove the stock sender in the side of the head (below the dizzy) and install the probe there instead. If so, anyone have a size of the stock, single pin sensor that is in the side of the head? If not, does anyone have a source for a tee fitting that will accomodate this application in the heater core lines?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I've seen people put the electrical pickup in place of the air bleed screw on the upper radiator hose fitting off the head. Not sure if that will work for mechanical gauges.

shouldn't these be installed in the engine side of the thermostat?

if there is any issue with the thermostat, you will not see any issue if it is installed on the radiator side.

i took my stock unit and "calibrated" it with a probe and taped on a scale beside it.

not as elegant but seems to work fine.

I pretty sure I got it from someone here that does Miata stuff.
I have searched my email records and can't find who the heck it was :(
The part is slighty bigger the it should be but it works fine.
The brass bits are from the parts bin at by local NAPA, it took a while to come up
with the right parts but as I said.....it works and no leaks :)

I wanted to reuse my mechanical gauges so I cut off the threads of the heater core fitting, tapped a O2 bung for 1/2 npt and then welded that to the threads of the heater core fitting and it was ready to accept the Auto Meter adapter.
