View Full Version : 1st gen 7 - coolant passages in intake manifold

I'm new at this, so hopefully you guys will cut me some slack :).

I'm working on prepping the car for IT (eventually), and during some recent work where I had the intake manifold off, it was recommended I plug the coolant ports going to the intake manifold. I had figured that would not be permitted, but I was told it was considered a part of the emissions system and therfore legal to plug.

The question is can I plug these? It sure makes taking the manifold off much easier.

That is the way I understand it as well. When I bought my car the intake was filled in with some kind of foam but the block was not plugged so I still need to use the o rings and gasket.

Specifically allowed, "Authorized mods" D,1, d. page 296 of your 2007 GCR. If you don't have the 2007 GCR, you should get one ASAP, it'll save a lot of headaches.

Don't know the HP gain but the coolant/water loss during a manifold swap is nil!

On a down side, every motor I've done this too has gone in the crapper by shear coincidence :bash_1_:

on the other hand,, i have plugged the intake water passages on every one of my rotary mazda since the early 80s and rx3, rx7 12A motors, never had a problem with the motors. raced rotary for about 20yrs.

Keeping coolant out of thi intake keeps the carb and fuel cooler (less hot) and seems to help performance. I can't say by how much, however.

It might keep the manifold cooler since it is getting baked by the exhaust. :bash_1_: You know a special manifold cooler! :unsure:

Or maybe we need a exhaust radiator!? Now what would that look like?
