View Full Version : Where is a good source for metric hardware?

Does anyone know of a good online source for metric hardware? I am trying to locate 12x1.5 in grade 10.9 hex head or 12.9 socket head cap screws. I usually go to Threads for the South which is local but not to big on metric fine thread. Most, if not all, industrial supply houses (MSC, McMaster, etc.) sell full box quantities and I don't need 50 - 100 of them.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

What length and how many? I might have them in stock or my local supply will sell me singles. The 12MM I show are 1.25 and 1.75.

www.mdmetrics.com Maryland Metrics, give them a call.

When I followed your link I though I you had found nirvana of metric fasteners but I too was fooled. having been born in Catonsville I have to give Maryland metrics a call.

The size is 12x1.5 fine thread. In that diameter 1.75 is standard (course) and 1.25 is extra fine (who knows what the equivalent Standard is?) Or maybe 1.5 is medium?

What's the length under the head and is the unthreaded length important? May have something. phil

You'd be surprised how much metric stuff can be found at Ace Hardware.

NAPA's usually have a pretty good assortment as well

http://www.accuratescrew.com has pretty much unlimited number of configurations.

But I go to a local shop that specializes in fasteners. They have all grades of metric there much cheaper then Lowes/Home Depot and in any quantity you need them.

Okay - here's a challenge: Find me an M7x1.5 about 20mm long.

No, that pitch dimension is not a mistake. Machine screw, socket head, whatever. I'm not picky on that front.

I have a stooopid vehicle speed sensor hold-down in the Golf's gearbox, the first couple of threads of which are AWOL. And it's in the car, of course.

You're sure it's not a 7X1.25 which is a real oddball but is documented. 7X1.5, no references to that I can find

I hadn't counted 7x1.5 out yet..... and yes, it does exist but it is a pipe thread...

Hmm. Might be 1.25 - I'm going by what the guy at our local good hardware place said after he measured it but we'll double-check.

M7 x 1.5 is a valid metric thread, IIRC.

[EDIT: MAYBE NOT. THAT'S MUCH TOO COURSE...]

Heck Kirk, just borrow one from your Uzi. (http://www.pol-tec.de/B&T_BT-21185_22-10-2006.pdf)

Wow! I want to thank you guys for the number and quick responses to my question. I have glanced at all of the sites given, placed them in a "fastener" folder in my favorites and will look at them in depth this weekend when work goes away.

I have not seen "fine" thread socket head cap screws at any of the sites. Perhaps they simply are not made. Also there is an "extra fine" pitch available in some sizes and although unneeded is equally elusive.

To the guys asking of the particular size, to be honest there are several and once I get a proper list together I'll PM you if I can not find a site that has what I need and allows me to simply populate a shopping cart and place an order.

Again much thanks to all and in hindsight I should have come to you guys first.

Thanks, E**a Guy. :)

The problem is that the first couple threads are bungled up. There's plenty of extra depth in the blind hole but I can't quite get the short, stock screw to catch. The 'box is in the car and i'm not particularly excited about trying anything that requires drilling/tapping with it in place.

Oh, well. It's going to be a goat rope.

Any modern machine shop or someone with a decent lathe should be able to chase some threads on a piece of rod and make you a piece of threaded rod or short stud. I'd make it 7X1.25 on the one end and 1/4-20 on the other. Loctite the 7mm end into the tranny and use a common nut to hold the sensor in.

Try www.mcmaster.com they are located in Atlanta and have a very wide assortment of stainless steel, and steel metric hardware. If you don't see the actual size/thread you want, that does not mean they do not have it...call and inquire. I get things the next day when ordering before 4pm cen. Chuck

hey check out your local fastenal branch i work for them and we carry a large line of metric in the gr 10.9 but make sure when you go in you ask them to check for a bulk number all of our fasteners come with 2 numbers one is a pre packaged and one is a bulk the bulk can be ordered in in small quantities but in most cases they must be ordered and most of the time are available within 48 hours but prolly sooner since we have a dist. center in your area. if you really run into a pinch give me a call between 7:30 and 5 at 440-992-0242 my name is Bob Jones and i can hook you up with a local branch and the correct part numbers.

Oh (as they say) SNAP! I totally forgot to tell Dave that his solution saved my M7x1.25 bacon! That part worked perfectly and my local dealer parts desk guys think you are like some kind of ETKA savant.

You rock.

I ended up buying from Fastenal like bunnylvr suggested. It has taken about 10 days to get everything but I had some pretty odd ball sizes that I could not find anywhere else and they had to get them from different warehouses across the country. The ability to order small quantities online and simply pick them up at the local store (< 5mi) is great.

There were two sizes and grades where the only people that carried them in small quantities ($15 min) was AAA Metric Supply.

Thanks for all your help guys.
