I had a model of that car back in the day. Loved those cars!!!! Would love to find one today. Any line on those flares and that air dam???? :D

BTW, it&#39;s nice to know that at some point in time VWoA actually thought racing was good for marketing.

Any idea of what ever happened to those cars? Would love some history on them (drivers, teams, etc.)

The cars (2) were built by McKee engineering for Bill Scott racing in Libertyville Il. The motors were by Bertils whose shop was on the premises of Scott VW at the time. I&#39;m pretty sure at least one of the cars is in the VW museum. One was driven by Milt Minter in the trans-am series. I think the other was a guest driver car.

I think it&#39;s cool, the air dam is VERY cool, but the flares? Top shelf fugly. I prefer the box flares on that car.

Ahhh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My wife could take or leave my &#39;new&#39; E30 M3. To some, this car is fugly. To me, it is automotive nirvana.

See??? Box flares...MUCH better. The Rocco flares look dumb and goofy on that car...the box flares fit it better, like the E30.

Andy, your wife thinks your car looks fine, but she&#39;d think the $$ would look better, especially as a new bathroom, right?

It depends. Those massive flares were a "period thing" Even BMW is guilty.

Back then a lot of teams didn&#39;t think about all the aerodynamics it seems. They went crazy on the air dam and for got about the rest. This one is much nicer:

The rules influenced what these pics are showing.

The top Bimmer is a Group 5 car. They were allowed a buttload of tire but had to retain the stock door, windshield, and rear window profile. Beyond that, there were few rules influencing aero design, so they became the most radical production-based cars in the world at that point.

The Scirocco looks like it&#39;s built to the Gr4 rules, although I only have any practical experience with that group in rallying trim. Gr4 was very much like Group A that followed it, and actually not all that far removed from our current LP Production rules. Not coincidentally, the gearboxes were bucks up, even though the bodywork was pretty much stock-ish. I think you&#39;ll discover that it&#39;s no accident that the airdam in the pic goes right to the front edge of the bumper, and of course there&#39;s no monster Gr5 wing.

I think the Polo Super 1600 is a cool ride - with bubble flairs...

Fenders don&#39;t have to be boxed on a VW to look good (although the Rally Golf does look very right to me), I think the one&#39;s Rob made for Chuck&#39;s GP Rabbit look pretty right.

Rob Shertz is one of the other guys on Chuck&#39;s team. He and Chuck built the molds and the parts for the Rabbit fenders, hood, quarters, air-dam and splitter.

I will drop him a line. The flares are not separate peices, they are full carbon fenders. Less than half the weight of what they replace.
