noob Q: will this suit work?

im a little confused about suit ratings...
just getting started, and i have to keep it inexpensive, so can I use this suit: suit (http://www.pyrotect.com/product.php?productid=13&cat=7&page=1)
with this innerwear: inner (http://www.pyrotect.com/product.php?productid=74&cat=19&page=1)

sorry if this seems dumb, but will that pass? I just dont get the rating system for suits.

I believe you're OK with that combo. I use a Sparco "1" Single Layer and Nomex underwear.

The suit is fine, since it has SFI 3-2A/1 certification - provided you have approved underwear to go with it. Unfortunately, the ad for the underwear is so damned non-specific, I would have to wonder if it passes muster. The GCR says nothing about SFI labels on underwear, instead being specific relative to material and/or brand name. The underwear ad doesn't give you any information about material or branding, only that passing mention of an SFI label that is meaningless within the context of the GCR.

Actually I would say no. That 'inner wear' states right in the description that its intended for use with their SFI 5 (I assume they mean SFI 3-2A/5) suits, the ones that done need underwear. And if your considering that one, also try on the Gforce GF505 http://www.gforce.com/products/racingsuits/gf505.html , I wear the 545 which is a little lighter since I sweat like a beast. but again in the 300 range with no underwear needed. I do have a nomex top I will wear on colder days and was very nice to have during drivers school when it was frigid.

I would second the recommendation not to go with a single layer suit. If, like me, you had to keep it inexpensive, the GF505 is just fine. I've used it in 100+ degree heat and I wasn't any worse for wear than the guys with $1000 suits. Like everything else it's a compromise. Yes you'll be a little hot, but nothing compared to a single layer suit in a fire :blink:

Though no one has mentioned it in this thread, I thought I'd mention that you should focus on one-piece fire suits; stay away from two-piece suits. If you're in an accident, and the corner workers have to help you get out of the car, the most likely way they're going to be able to grab you is their arms under your shoulders and lift. In this scenario, a two-piece suit is likely to separate between the pants and jacket, leaving your midriff (and beer belly, if you have one like I do :-) ) exposed.

EDIT: Also, I don't know where the original poster is geographically, but if you're going to be adding a cool shirt system, a heavier weight suit isn't a disadvantage, and can be an advantage. That same extra material that makes it hotter without a cool shirt means that it insulates you better after you put the cool shirt in, too, keeping you cooler longer.

you guys were right, I called pyrotect today and asked them about the material if their innerwear.
it is tightly woven cotton, nothing more. explains the price.


please name some comfortable brands of approved underwear

No clue on that, I just have the sparco shirt, its just like wearing a nomex suit only warmer if you have that and the suite on and the temps come up.

I find the G-Force underwear to be plenty comfortable. I intentionally got one size too big so there'd be plenty of "gather" at the ankles and wrists to protect the "seams" between the suit and the gloves/shoes.
