Yep, that's been around for - literally - decades. It's a cult film from French filmmaker Claude Lelouch, done in 1976. We used to sit around actually watching on **ON FILM**.

Before the InterWeb it was something that was hard to get; today it's now available on DVD. I bought it...

As Jeff pointed out, there's a lot of mystery and discussion behind the basis of the film. Lelouch did a great job for something done in '76; we actually believed the hype back then. However, these days we have a more-discerning eye, and it's fairly easy to spot that we're not really going 100+.

It's still a fun film, though.

On Edit: "REAL" car guys have this in their DVD collection, along with "Bullit", "Vanishing Point", "The French Connection" (the original one), "LeMans", "Winning", and now "Grand Prix"...otherwise you suck.

:023: , although whoever did the soundtrack on Bullit must have thought those cars had 45-speed trannys.

This is a cool site, it plays the route on google maps along with the video.

Also according to IMDB:

he route taken in the film is 10.42 km long (6.48 mi). It takes the driver 7:57 to cover that distance, giving him an average speed of 78.64 km/h (48.86 mph)[/b]

According to recent claims by Claude Lelouch, he was driving his own Mercedes in the film, and later dubbed over the sound of a Ferrari 275GTB to give the impression of much higher speeds. Calculations made by several independent groups using the film show that the car never exceeds 140 km/h (85 mph), which seems to lend credence to his recent comments.[/b]
