What are acceptable (safe) values for EGT reading on a 4cyl. IT engine?

Assuming you have the probe the manufacturers (or motor builders) recommended distance from the back side of the valve and you are not monitoring a cylinder that tends to run richer than others 1300 degrees should be plenty safe. YMMV

Since I sold my ITB car, I'll post up some data from the 1.8L Golf I used to run...

I would shoot for 1300 to 1350 most of the time. CIS cars were notoriously hard to keep happy accross all the cylinders (and I've got the 12 used pistons to proove it!) but anything up to 1450 would be OK, but above 1450 is very dicey...Here's a lap from Road Atlanta last fall in the moring when it was cool, the car was a little lean on #4 and you can see this, we found the problem was a lazy injector, and it went away. The car ran with these sorts of numbers for 2 years with no problems.
