Maybe I'm going senile early but I thought the 4k was a Rabbit trans only?
Was the 4k trans delivered in any US spec Golfs 2s?

To my knowledge they where not, however the 9a/4y/aen/acd fromt he 8v gti have the exact same ratios, but the 4k final is a 3.94 instead of a 3.67. So have been tolling for just a box of 4k parts I dont need the case. I just want the final drive.

I found this on http://scirocco.org/gears/

Via Drew MacPherson (on the scirocco mailing list):

Here's a chart of transmission code and axle flanges (A2 transmissions) from the VW parts catalogue. There may be some aaplications missing, butI tried to cover most of them. I did not specify gas vs diesel, but I think as a ROT most gas transmissions in Dijifant applications (ie 100hp and up) are 100mm flanges, while most CIS and Diesel applications (85-90 hp) are 90mm flanges. The obvious exception to this that I've found are of course 85+ Sciroccos and Cabs, and some early A2 Jetta GLs. YMMV.

Bill,

James is pretty much spot on. Never seen an A2 w/ a 4K. The did come in some of the mid/late 80's Cabriolets, and possibly the 8v Scirocco IIs though.

The 4K was never factory-installed in the A2s although as Bill stated, I think it might have been installed on some Sloroccos as well as Rabbits. What's worse is that SOME of the 4K transaxles fit in the A2s and some don't - the later 4Ks came in what I call a "convertible" case that fits both the A1 and the A2. I guess you could say that transaxle "goes both ways". The way to tell is to look at the rear-most differential housing bosses - a "convertible" case has bosses that allow a bolt to pass completely thru the housing.

Matt,

Every 4K I've ever seen has the 'convertible' case. It was the 2H (and other) boxes that don't fit in A2s

thats why its so hard to find a good 4k kids swap them into an A2 16v to make the car quick, blow out a diff bolt and finally build a tranny the right way.

I think you're right - the 4K was the last iteration the close-ratio box in the A1 GTi, right?

Matt
Are you saying that you know about things that go "both ways"?
cheers
