I've been researching for 6 months and ordered mine today from Sampson.

Yes. Very happy with it. I have had zero problems.

What tracks do you run? Road Atlanta, Summit Point, and Birmingham are the ones that worry me, due to their hilliness. The 2W starter system sounds like GMRS radios (which require an FCC license). With the GMRS band being up around 460 MHz, they're gonna be affected by the hills and trees. I'm just wondering if we'd need a repeater for hilly tracks.

I got a 4-5 watt system. It works fine at Summit, Mid Ohio, Beaverun, Nelsons. I will be using it at Gingerman July 19-20 and VIR Aug 2-3 in the next two weeks, I'll let you know how it does at VIR when I get back.

I've used a 5W Vertex system from Shawn Sampson at VIR, Watkins Glen, Summit Point, NHIS, LRP. No problems at all.

What band were you on with the Vertex? Something around 450 MHz?

Cool. Thanks for the info. Is that the "Racer" package with Vertex VX-160 radios?

Yes, It's the racer package with Vertex upgrade. Very solid radios. I also got a 12VDC battery eliminator for the in-car radio that connects into the cigarette lighter on the dash. I did this so that I wouldn't have to change batteries during the 12 hr races.
