This came up in another forum, but now that this is here, I'll repost it.

The very popular IO Port mount is actually a Bogen 3025 3D tripod head. It can be purchased for just over $20 at a few different places. Beach Camera for example sells it for $23.10, here's a link: http://www.beachcamera.com/product_query.a...roduct&i=BG3025 (http://www.beachcamera.com/product_query.asp?query=product&i=BG3025)

It doesn't have the red urethane puck, or the roll tube clamp, but those are the easy parts to make.

Well wadya know? I'm very happy with my I/O Port mount, but it wasn't that cheap!

I made my own camcorder mount out of a aluminum ballast mount from the local stock car shop. Then I took some scrap 1/4" flat stock and bent it under heat in my vise till I got the right angle. Drilled two holes, one to ballast mount size and one to tripod head size. Total cost under $40.00

I've done basically the same thing; bought the Bogen 3025, mounted it to a strip of metal, secured with 2 large U-bolts and damped w/ a cut up mouse pad. Total cost under $30. Video is rock solid...

Not that I don't like the IO Port mount but there was a topic a few months back about video camera mounts and there seem to be a slightly cheaper but beefier aluminum mount. Does anyone remember or possibly post the link to the vendor.

And, since then I added a Bogen 2915 super clamp to mine. Under $70 total, bought locally including tax.
