I bought an EXP a week and a half ago, that had been sitting for about 5 years. I raced it over the week end and had a blast.
We gave the car some attention before the race, but it still needs more. The car is a bit different, fun and potentially pretty fast.
Does anybody have a source for 1.6liter CVH engines / parts?
Thaks in advance

What do you need and where are you?

I probably have just about everything, but new parts are getting kind of rare for the 1.6.

You can email me off board at [email protected] if you want.

is that a Balcezak car?

Ted B's yellow car: it had been sitting for five years. I ran it at LRP last week, its a lot heavier than my scirocco and the motor....well...it needs some love. Its a fun car, and seems easy to work on.
I've been able to find brakes, calipers, tune-up stuff, at the local NAPA. I got some spare stuff with the car and have to go through it all.

Drew, where are you from? We are from their area, have seen the car a few times (but not in action, just sitting behind the kart trak)

Hi Diane,
Im from Vernon. I think Bill and/or Ted mentioned you. You may have seen my scirocco?? Jeff Leone and I raced in the 3 hour enduro on Saturday at NHIS with the car. We had a great time. The car no longer has compression (and I mean 0) in the number 1 cylinder. We had to come in twice and change the #1 cylinder plug. The first time we came in, there wasn't anything left except the threads of the plug. I'll pull the head off this week and see whats up. I'm sure getting a quick education on Fords.

Joeg,
I was wondering if you've experienced problems with plugs? We were using Bosch Platnum (single electrode)extended reach.
sorry the last reply got posted twice.
Thanks, Drew

Yes, Are you near by also?

Drew--All I use are Autolites in a slightly colder range. Depending on the casting number on the head, either a 104 (Gasketless) or 3923 Autolite (with Gasket).

If you ate the plug, you have bigger issues.

Offhand, it sounds like you had a detonation problem--too low octane/too high static compression, bad distributor curve (too much advance) or overheating.

I'd have to agree with you. I'll pull the head off and tell you what I find.
Its curious that 3 cyclinders were fine and one cylinder has all the symptoms. Although they all looked a bit lean.
Thanks, Drew

Drew, you ran the EXP in the enduro? Wow, you are brave! I'm not sure my motor would last 3 full hours and it hasn't sat for 5 years. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif Congrats, sounds like you had fun. Wish we had been able to make it, I'm sure we'll catch up at another event.

No, I grew up in Glastonbury just down the road but I live in Kentucky now just outside of Lexington. Neat to hear of the old homies around. Jon

Drew--If it was Number 3 or number 4 hole plug, that is a fuel distribution problem (leaning)probably compounded by overheating/ignition advance issues.

I am originally from New Haven, but now reside in WNY.

Cheers.

Drew

If you get a chance, fire me an email: [email protected]. We may have a couple of parts as well.

O.K., I pulled the head off last night,
The Intake and Exhaust Valves for the #1 and #2 cylinders are badly bent, The #3 cylinder is obviously the cylinder that tried destroyed the plug. There are huge chunks taken out of the top of the cylinder and out of the dome in the head. IT IS UGLY!

We didn't run the car above 7000 RPM but apparently thats too high.

Can anything other than a rev limiter help the problem? I'm gonna get real bored bringing the head to the machine shop after every race.

Diane, when is your next scheduled race?
Thanks
Drew

Drew,

We're taking it easy this year. We'll be at Mt. Ascutney hillclimb in Sept (not to run though). And I may run Lime Rock in Nov with EMRA, I haven't been to LR since July 2002. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/frown.gif

Drew--Those motors are not designed to run (in IT-legal spec) at anything above 6800--even that is way over the power peak.

Why? The hydraulic lifters can't keep up and you will get valve float and bent valves. Usually you see bent valves with a broken cam belt, though. Those are not VW-type lifters. The valve train is quite heavy!

Short of installing a rev limiter, you must use some discipline not to exceed a safe redline.

Sounds like over-revving is the root cause of all of your problems.

Thanks Joe,
I guess I'll install a rev limiter (YAWN).
I don't have the discipline to be that conservative. I'm going to try to run the car less lean and hopefully finish a few races. We are going totry to get to NHIS for the CHEAP DATE double regional
Thanks for the help,Its nice to have someone who can confirm our thoughts

I managed to run both races in the double regional at NHIS, and NO BENT Valves!
I kept the RPMs below 6700 and generally never more than 6200. All the plugs came home in tact and looked pretty decent. I used the 3293 Autolites with gaskets (Thanks Joe) Now I'm ready to start finding some speed.
Joe, Does your car have a good brake pedal?
mine is mushy. The brakes seem to hold up real well, but the pedal is near the floor and real spongy. The car has stainless break-lines, new calipers, all new rear hardware. Thanks, Drew

Drew--Check the adjustment on the rears.

Also, you may want to replace the master if it was sitting around for a long time.

It will feel a bit mushy if the pads are worn, too.

Good luck.

Hi Joe,
I replaced the master cylinder and re-adjusted the rears, blead the heck out of everything and voila! I've got a decent pedal.
Ran the car in the NARRC-offs and the motor quit after 6 laps. I'm not sure if its just the head gasket or something more yet. I was planning on building a new motor for next year anyway.
I'm determined to make that car into something competitive. Thanks for the advice,
Drew

Did it "blowed up real good" or just quit?

Can only be carburation or ignition (describes too much).

Can you determine what type of ignition--TFI or Durapark?

What kind of carb?

racerdrew43
10-06-2003, 08:10 AM
Hi Joe,
The carb is a Weber DATV and the ignition module markings are all worn off. It has a chromematic sticker that used to have markings, but time has taken its toll. I have an old duraspark ignition in my parts box. That has a blue sticker. Is there a significant difference between them? I'll be putting the MSD in, for its rev limiter.
I havent had a chance to pull the head off yet. There is a mix if water and oil dripping out of the lower head area near the #1 cylinder. Could be a head gasket.
We were hoping to run the endurance race at WGI, but time is short.
Is your car already running in production?

joeg
10-06-2003, 01:20 PM
Never heard of a Weber DATV; did you mean a DATR?

Yes the Production car runs. I do not drive it, however.

You definitely have a gasket problem and the head could have cracked if you got it hot enough.

The problem I discovered with the old stock distributors was that they allowed to much mechanical/centrifugal advance at sustained higher RPM. You need to limit the slot in which the shafts move the advance weights.

The big advance would detonate/preignite the motors and overheat them.

I pulled the head off last night, yup its cracked in a couple of spots. All the cylinders were sprayed with water. I'll be pulling the motor soon.
Any idea where to get a passenger side fender. I'd like to do some body work and get the car painted while i have the motor out. Thanks Joe, Drew

EXP Body parts--Tough one. Try South West junk yards (google "used auto parts"). These are truly rare pieces.

My guess on fender OEM NOS part numbers would be E2GZ-16005-A (Left) and E2gz-16006-A(right), but that is just a guess.

Good luck (What year is your EXP? An 82 or 83-85?)

HI Joe,
THe build plate says september 92
Were they different in 93?
That could make things even harder. I've checked with VENG (an aftermarket company) and local junk yards, they just look at me funny.
I'll try the south west, Thanks, Drew

Drew--You meant 1982, right?

Yes, there are differences. The rear hatch for one.

Mechanically, there are more significant differences. Strut/Hub/Knuckle/ outer CV Joint, brake calipers, lower control arm and engine oiling (rear brake spindles too).

The Strut/Hub/Knuckle/Cv joint for the "newer models" are from a Ford Tempo (a bit beefier...maybe), but the engine oiling system in the older model (baffled pan and different oil pump) is superior.

Mechanically, all 85 and older EXP (s) are identical to the same year Escorts and Lynx(s).

I have all mechanical parts for the older Escort (your 82), so let me know if you have a problem finding anything.

Cheers.
