What are you running for oil temps and what are you doing to cool them down?

Tim's car was hitting about 300 degrees this past weekend at Lime Rock. He does have a cooler but we haven't done anything to the oil pan yet.

I don't have an oil temp guage yet so I have no idea what I'm reaching.

We are running Red Line 50W in both cars.

Also RPM's: factory redline is 6000 or 6200? Do you often go above this? I realize the car isn't making power there anymore but sometimes you get to the "I can shift to 4th for 50' but then I need to downshift again" vs "above redline"

Thanks,

Diane

Diane--Can't help you much with the RPM(s) since I run a 1.6 (which will rev a bit higher than your 1.9).

I wouldn't think it was that hot at Lime Rock, so 300 is high.

What was the water temps?

What was your oil pressure-Was it low? How fast does the motor build oil temperature-Does it get hot fast? If you answered yes to both of these questions, you might want to look at the bearings, because they are in danger of being spun! If you have too much oil pressure, it will run hot, too. Oil that is too thick will run hot, also.

It was quite chilly last weekend, maybe 50 and damp!

Water temp on that car was about 225, mine is usually a bit less but I am <ahem> still a bit bad about checking guages not where I'm used to them being. It's only my 2nd race, still getting used to traffic. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/redface.gif

Actually, his oil pressure was higher than mine. Mine is usually in the 50's, his was around 60.

The cars don't build water <edited> temp any faster or slower than the street car that I've had since new, I consider them "normal".

(Tim, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif )

Diane--That is some serious water temp. Like you said, it was damp and chilly.

You should have been running no hotter than 180 to 195 (water) in those conditions--maybe even less.

If the motor is still strong (check the oil dump tank), you probably have a cooling issue with the radiator (insufficient capacity or airflow). Also tell him to run the heater to help keep the temps down as well as the rad fan!

Left as is that puppy is going to pop if summer ever gets here.

Good luck!

Mine usually runs a hair below 200, sometimes a hair above. His has always run hotter. And he had the heat on. We ran it in the heat last Sept - it was about 90 out, same thing. Don't know about the oil temp though! Oh, and he added a switch to the fan so he can turn it on, and he has been. Mine is still at the factory 226 degrees.

We are looking into acusumps, and have pulled a spare motor out of the garage to freshen.

All in all, we are pretty surprised his hasn't blown up yet. It was quite the abused car that I got for free and the motor had 135K on it then. We just put new bearings in it and that was about it.

My water temp runs around 180-185 , but I dont have an oil temp gauge.

Diane...I do the same thing too. Being a novice yet, Im not looking at my gauges much yet.

I've gotten right to about 7000 rpm or pretty close anyway, and it would start to feel like the limiter went off.

LOL Glad I'm not the only one. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif

Sometimes on the last lap I'll remember, like it does much good then. Sometimes I'm really good and check it on the 3rd or 4th lap (when everyone starts to spread out) but forget after that.

I'm getting there! Looking farther ahead each time. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif

Funny, I have never felt like I hit a rev limiter and I don't think Tim has either - he commented on that the first time he ran the car last year. I wonder if that was changed by your year? We have an 87 & 88

Diane, suggest water wetter. I run se divison (always hotter than H---) and require this stuff. I run a big clifford alum radiator with this stuff and still 200-205 degs in race. Stroube
