O2 sensor survival

I want to put an O2 sensor in my 1st gen header, but I am worried about the high exhaust temperatures. How far downstream does Mazda mount the stock O2 sensor, and has anyone with a 2nd gen had difficulty with getting O2 sensors to last due to excessive heat?

The stock sensor on a 2nd gen is located right at the end of the manifold. Maybe 12" from the rear port. I installed one in each primary of my header about 8" from the each port and have never had a problem.
