Fuel=time

Any one have a good estimate how long a 1st gen RX-7 will go with a stock tank!

1 1/2hrs, i was running a 16 gal cell, if i remeber correctly the stock tank is 15. My cell always had about 1 1/2 to 2 gallons left in it at the end of an 1 1/2 enduro.

The longest I have been able to go with the stock tank (1985 GSL-SE) is 1 hr. 40 min. 1.5 hours is a bit safer, even though I shift around 7k or 7.5k when trying to conserve fuel.

Depends on the track, how long are you WOT and at what RPM? Worst consumption I've received is about 8 gallons for 30 minutes. Also I wasn't able to go below 1/4 tank stock without fuel pickup issues in looooooong corners.

And yes, I like to run as little gas as needed...so I checked this stuff.

I emptied the tank completely, and crammed in 65 litres....yeah, yeah, I know, that foreign damn litre crap, but, anyway, I don't try for more than 1 1/2 hours, and sometimes that's pushing it. In our 2 hour enduros, I come in at 1 hour 20 mins for 20 litres.

Hey bcarter-65 litres=about 17 gallons so of course it helps! Safe to say that the stock tank-14.5gal. will run for more then an hour.

The 84/85 fuel tanks can pick up fuel to almost the last drop. The 79 to 83 tanks have fuel pick up issues as mentioned by Quickshoe.

4.55 litre = 1 Imperial gallon
3.84 litres = 1 US gallon

65 litres = 16.9 US gal
65 litres = 14.3 Imp gal

I've heard (not tried) that if you jack up the side of the car with the fuel filler (driver's rear?) that you can get an extra 2 gallons in the tank. Something about an air bubble in the top of the tank that ramains if the car is level. That should add about 10 minutes to your time.

Extra fuel-I think you are correct-I have noticed when you fill the tank-or over fill-it will bubble down and you can jam some more in!

I don't know about the 2 gallons, the 84/85 I seem to get approx an additional quart or two (tops) when I jack the back drivers corner up and fill to the cap. (Some of us will do anything to try to go that extra 2 laps, hoping it will give us an advantage later)

The 79-83 may get the additional 2 gallons, but I don't know.

I agree with the bit about 84's getting better pickup, as I have never had a problem with mine, but know lots of guys with older cars who have trouble with the last 1/4 tank.

We also recently tried jacking the car up to get more fuel in, and altho we didn't measure, I was surprised how much more went in.

Hey Allen, two laps could mean the race in the Endurance...certainly in the 1 1/2 hour one at Namao, as that's right on the very limit of my tank.

I agree, two laps could turn out being an advantage...Short shifting slightly and filled to the cap certainly helped me win the 1.5 hour enduro at Namao....If I was forced to stop, my stratagy would have changed to go full out for the entire duration.

Are you going out to the test session on Friday? I hope to make it out...See you there.

hmmm... that's funny because every time we fill our up (sitting level) we get fuel sloshing out of the tank for the first 3 or 4 laps on right handers. Happens even if we dont fill the tank all the way.

Where is it splashing out from? the cap?..Once we have the cap sealed, it all stays in...

Allen..I'll be at the track Friday to check out my solutions to vapour lock...another more pressing fuel concern.

I was just Curious how much fuel would u need to run 30mins? (i figure about 6 gallons just to be safe) if you were running a normal regional race you wouldnt load up the car with 15 gallons of fuel would you?

We actually do. Put the car on the scales and see how the weight affects things. Items to consider:

- We use the weight to make minimum
- a Full tank 'sloshes' much less in our cars and doesn't upset the handling
- Low weight is good weight as long as the balance is right.
- You always know were you are at because it's always supposed to be full at the start...

Yep. We've tried a couple of different caps with zero luck. We just try to put in enough for the race, but that's pretty inconsistant.

Gotta be bad seals in the caps, like if you are getting them from the junkyard, and they have dried up, or maybe a crack in the metal part of the filler pipe.
