The GCR says "Air intake source shall be within the confines of the engine compartment "OR STOCK LOCATION". I have a 1st Gen RX7 that currently (as purchased) has a Racing Beat air filter mounted directly on top of the carb. At a recent drivers school I became friendly with another RX7 driver who had a very cool air induction set-up. He had a hose (dryer type hose) clamped to the carb intake, leading to a K&N filter that was mounted in the forward engine compartment. It looked great although I'm still not certain how he was getting much air with the install being just behind the headlight assembly. Maybe from ground effects??? Anyway, after seeing that set-up I'm very curious about how others are doing this???

Well, there are a few interpretations as to what constitutes "Air intake source shall be within the confines of the engine compartment."

To me that means that you cannot run your air intake outside of the engine compartment nor shall the air be taken directly from outside the engine compartment. In other words, the air has to actually enter the engine compartment first.

The headlight bucket area is a preferred area because there is a bunch of fresh air that comes in there at speed (a lot of factory holes) and it is as far away as possible from the 1700+ degree headers.

Sounds like your drivers school buddy had a pretty good idea using a F/I cone style breather element. Ours is based on the RB assembly but is enclosed so that it only draws from the pass. side of the radiator area.
