Cause for lost 5th gear

I have a 1st gen tranny that I raced for years until last year when, with no warning, suddenly it had no fifth gear. The shifter will go into the notch, there just isn't anything there.

will it go into reverse? If not then you may have a broken shift fork (5th/reverse). I just tore down a second gen tranny with the same problem. The shift forks are aluminum and can break under stress (missed shifts).
