Well the new engine is in. Did I type the word new? More accurately my new JY Racing Type SR motor is installed. (thats Junkyard Sans-rebuild...easily distinguishable by the plume of smoke it releases when entering brake zones).
Yes it smokes. We dyno'ed it yesterday and it threw a huge cloud at the end of every session(two wrenches treated and released for smoke inhalation). And it dyno'd an apparently anemic 110hp. I didn't have time to install the engine and tranny myself so I had to pay a race shop to do it. I'm hoping it won't be as bad on the track, but if your going to the next M-O double regional you might want to mount fog lights (not that anybody is going to be behind me for long).

So planning for this winter...I can't afford a $5K ITA built motor. One of the guys at the shop said that the Mazda's crate motors are actually pretty good (he's a honda guy). I think they run around $2k for the complete assembly (they apparently don't sell short blocks anymore). Anyone have experience with the Mazda crate motors?

I would do anything I could to make sure everyone KNOWS that smoke is coming out the tailpipe. If I were a race steward and I thought you were dumping/burning fluid on the track, you would see a mechanical black flag.

Granted, I have NO flagging experience.

I'm not sure where you info is coming from, but all the motors I replaced from Mazda were block plus flywheel, oil pan and water pump (w/ housing). I would not consider that a complete engine, as there is lots of swapping over to do. The engines are good and Mazda's warranty (though short) is pretty good. I would go for it.

Dunno how mechanically inclined you are, but what about doing a rebuild yourself?

Like ITSRX7 said, I'd talk to the main corner workers and explain the situation to them, especially that you're not dumping any oil.

The JY Type SR motor (I'm going to start using that.. thats funny!!) in our 7 got me meatballed at my drivers school in my first session. I came in and they took a look at my oil pressure (60psi at idle) and I explained to them that we were running pre-mix because we weren't sure if the Oiler was working and that it probably was. Basically, I got the "F(riggi)n rotaries" response and they sent me back out http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif

It did get worse though by the last event... bad enough that I could see my "con-trails" in my buddies video who was about 20-30 seconds behind me.

We're going through the rebuild/Mazda recon/Pro built debate ourselves. We'll probably tear into it over the winter to see how the housings are and then decide.

Is that 2K with the Mazdacomp member discount?
