View Full Version : Oil Pan Baffle??

Is an oil pan baffle a necessity in the 12a's? We're pulling the 12a out of the parts car this weekend and if a oil pan baffle is needed we might wait on installing the motor into the car.

How about an Accusump??

The motor showed better than 40 lbs at idle according to the factory guage.

Any oil improvements are beneficial. In high G turns, the oil pressure will fall below 5 psi!

I understand that anything can help, but is oil starvation a known problem on the 12a motors? Time is ticking away on us and we want to get the motor in asap... but if we definately need to install baffles in the pan, we will...

anyone have any pictures of their oil pan baffles?

(Now that I think about it, I'm assuming that the 12a's have an oil pickup tube like piston motors... oops http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif)

Yes you need either an oil pan baffle or an accusump. The accusump will provide you with start up oil as well as high speed oil. The baffle has a scraper and keeps excess oil off the crank and thus also minmizes power loss. (or so I have been told)

I use the baffle in both cars, the RX7 and the CRX. I would go to Mazdacomp and buy it and don't screw around trying to construct your own and have the engine blow.

Take a look at a rotary oil sump and you'll see the baffle plate has nothing to do with the crank. It's not a windage tray it is exactly what it's called, a baffle. It's purpose is to allow the oil to de-foam as it re-enters the pan. Instead of being pumped in in a steady foamy flow it hits the plate and spreads out into a thin sheet which allows the air to escape the oil more easily. It should help prevent the oil from sloshing up into the upper recesses of the sump as you corner too. It's easy to install, cheap insurance. Just plan to buy longer bolts for the pan if you install it. I've heard some say an Accusump is not needed on a rotary but again, good insurance? There is an oil tube pickup just like in a piston motor. Though I just disassembled a blown 13B that was missing it's pickup! I wonder why it blew? http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif

Hey--I thought the correct term was "ECCENTRIC" rather than CRANK...
Cheers.

Any difference (besides price) between the MazdaComp one and the Moroso one?

{edit} Holy Cow! The holes aren't even close to the same! I'll just stick with Mazda on this one http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/wink.gif

Chris, can't argue with that, the discussion between accumsump and pan was around the Honda which has a crank. Just having rebuilt a 12a, I know you are right.

Regarding differences between Moroso and Mazdacomp I really don't know we have a Moroso for the Honda and a Mazdacomp for the Mazda. Since they are different cars and one has a crank and the other does not, I can't compare them. I have never had an oiling problem with the Mazda and I have a second spare set up for a second engine we will rebuild later this year. I am perfectly satisfied with the mazdacomp parts, they do the job, I have no idea how their prices compare with Moroso on this item.

Looking at the Moroso baffle I'm confused. Seems like from what I remember the pickup goes through the two holes in the Comp baffle that overlap each other in the upper left corner of the picture. Anyone actually used the Moroso baffle?

That confused me as well Chris. The Moroso one doesn't look anything like the MComp one!

Besides the bolt holes, there is only one hole that matches up between the two of them

Guys, try this on for size by looking only at the moroso baffle.

The picture of the baffel is as tho you are laying under the motor looking up at the bottom of the motor.

The hole at 12:00 (as we are looking at the picture)is for the dip stick.

The three holes at 6:00 are for oil return.

The goffy shaped hole at 7:30 is for the oil pump stem.

The hole at 10:00 is for oil pressure adjustment thing ????

Now if the scale of the two pictures were the same & you were to take & rotate the Mazda baffel 180* bottom to top & lay it over the moroso picture I beleive you would see that they are the same. At least usuable close.

[This message has been edited by Speed Raycer (edited February 08, 2002).]The top one is for a 13-B,the bottom one is 12-A.I run a baffle and an accusump in my 84 12-A car for solo and it makes a big difference. The oil temp is 30-40 %lower,no blowing oil out on left turns and it keeps oil in the pan.
