Why isn't the 89 Accord LXi Coupe classed in ITB?

I can see that at 120hp, it looked like an ITA car at one point. Still kinda looks like one...

It's a A20A3 engine, what's the 86-88?

1986-1987

Sedans came in base DX, luxury LX and loaded LXi trim levels. The two-door hatchback came in either DX or LXi guise. The top dog LXi included all the features of the LX (such as air conditioning and power everything) and added fuel injection, alloy wheels and, on the sedan, a power moonroof.

The engine was increased in size, from 1.8 to 2.0- liters and produced either 98 horsepower (in the carbureted DX and LX trims) or 110 ponies in the fuel-injected LXi. An all-new suspension featured "double-wishbone" design at all four wheels.

The 1988 and 1989 had the 120hp motor.

As Andy said, there are differences. Here is some info. from a post a while back:

Both the 86-89 Accord LXi and the 87 Prelude Si use Honda's A20A3 12V FI 2.0L engine (also called the "BT" in older models). In 1988, Honda boosted the performance of the A20A3 engine from 110hp to 120 in the Accord.

The '88 was rated at 110 hp, but I can not find any spec differencs between the '88 and '89 engines. There is an '89 SEL car that came with rear disk brakes, that should not be ITB legal.

Andy, when we put the Accord through the process, we used 120 HP as the base for all three (86-88) years. PK

I always was under the impression that the increase from 110 to 120 hp was in '89, thus only the '86-'88 cars rated at 110 hp were originally classified in ITB.

I've asked this before. Is ten hp and rear disc a reason it wouldn't be in the same class as the 86-88?

Last time I looked on scca,org the 86-89 was ITB. Is there a better site?

You need to reference the official Improved Touring Category Specs (ITCS), available on the SCCA web site. I don't have the url handy.

Part of the confusion on years might stem from the practice of listing ONLY the specific model years requested, and NOT updating them to allow follow-on years even if the specs are the same.

For example, the 1993 Golf III was listed in A when first requested but it took a separate request to get the 94-97 years added to the spec line. Newer ones are now legal (with the 5-year-old rule) but haven't been added: Even though a '98 Golf 2.0 is the same as the '97, it isn't expressly legal.
