Plastigage and block codes

Is there an easier way to get the block codes on the D16A6 then having to take the transmission off? I'm trying to plastigage the mains but the bearings that were put in before I got the car have no color markings at all...I've looked 100 times. Now I need to start from scratch.

I presume youve removed the oil pan right?

All that is done. I'm in the midst of plastigaging the rods. Then I realized via my Helm's manual that the block codes for the mains are right above the flywheel. I've never seen any other Honda motor that stamps them like this. All the others can been seen by simply taking off the oil pan. It's just hard to believe Honda really didn't think this one through.
