View Full Version : 5th Gear Trouble in Scirocco Tranny

Here's one I can't seem to figure out.

While at the track this past weekend, I was hampered by the loss of 5th gear. I would not be able to find 5th gear. 1st to 4th remained fine. When I returned to the paddock, and checked for 5th I had no problem locking into it. Oddly enough, it seems to be a high speed(rev) problem. Typically, I would be able to find 5th for the first few laps; then lose it.

The tranny was rebuilt for me. I checked for the adjuster screws; but if they're the two bolt heads visible from above the tranny; there are no springs, or detent balls in place. Is this the right location? Are they the right screws?

Any help, would be great help.

Thanks... BuzzaOne

Buzz-Could be a motor/tranny mount issue. In other words, at high rpm, the motor/tranny could be going through some gyrations that prevent the linkage from doing its job properly.
The next idea would be a clutch review, but given all the other gears work fine--the real test is reverse--I would pretty much rule this out.

I would not suspect an internal tranny problem, but who knows...

cheers.

Thanks for the reply.

Reverse does work. If I understand you correctly, I should look at the lower tranny mounts for secureness.

I'll post any updates.

It's probably a linkage problem related to exhaust heat. Make sure that all the linkage bits are in like-new shape. Also, if you recently replaced them with aftermarket bushings (almost any not purchased at dealership), make sure the cheap plastic hasn't just melted. Another thing you should check for is adequate tranny oil. 5th gear and synchro is the first to lose lubrication when fluid level drops.

Found the source of the leak. Loose connection of the backup/fifth gear connector.

Hopefully with that resolved, I'll hold fifth for the duration of the sessions.

Thanks to all for the responses and tips. I'll report back after next weekends runs.

Yes it is.. I'm hopeful these ideas/tips give me a "full" day at the track. Haven't been so since picking up the 'Rocco.

Well the results on in... everything held together this past weekend. 3rd, 4th and 5th all held up. Now its time to turn the attention to "power."

Thanks again....

Paul,

I don't know if you remember me from the EMRA days or not. I was running the 'other' MR2 (Beth's old one, via Charlie). I guess you sold the Escort.
