I have been using MTL also but have switched to the factory VW/Audi Syn gear oil with no failures. Shifts better IMO...

I use the Redline MTL as well, with no failures ever. Those who are particularly hard on transaxles, however, might benefit from Redline's MT-90, for example, which has more "cushion" in exchange for slightly more friction.

Oh, I've used the Redline MTL with open, Quaife, locked, and VWMS diffs without a problem, although SRS does recommend something thicker (perhaps even non-synthetic) for the VWMS clutch-type LSD. I tried the MT-90 for a short time, but didn't like the feel as much.

Plain old dinosaur oil. 10-30. Used it in the Rabbit (rusted out, no gearbox problems ever, except for some problems related to the welded diff...not lubrication problems), the Scirocco (bought and sold it twice, no gearbox problems ever, it now lives on in Florida with a continuing record of no gearbox problems), Golf #1 (crashed it, never had a gearbox problem) and current Golf #2 (enduro & sprint car, no gearbox problems ever).
