strut modification

According to ITCS 17.1.4.D.5.b.1.2"MacPherson strut equipeed cars may substitute struts and/or may use alternate inserts".

What is the consencous on what is allowed by "substitute strut". For example: the Audi Coupe GT uses a one peice strut housing and hub carrier. Could you replace this with a two peice unit, with one strut housing and a seperate hub carrier. Same bearings, hubs and brakes on both set ups.

Advantage would be easier hub changes and replacement of broken/damaged peices.

I know that this is not specifically allowed therefore....Just wondering how much is considered part of the "strut", especially since they specifically mention "and/or alternate inserts"

While I am at it. In '85 there was a midyear change in the hub/bolt pattern. I am assumeing that you can replace hubs with a 4X108 bolt pattern with ones from an earlier car that has a 4X100 pattern as they are listed on the same spec line.

Seriously. Unless you can do it without modifying the hub carrier you can't.

Any strut is legal. But you can't touch the hub carrier.

I have herd some people say that the hub "carrier" on an Audi is part of the strut housing, thus it can be modified... I would agree that it is one piece however I am not sure what competitors would say about modifying the lower half (hub carrier) of the housing, since they can't... I guess it is a gray area...

We DO NOT change anything in relation to the hub area on our cars, not to mention it is very easy to change out the entire housing as one piece.

1 Bolt holding the top of the strut, 1 bolt holding the tie rod, 2 ball joint bolts, 1 axle nut, and 2 bolts holding on the caliper. Takes about 10 minutes after you have done it a couple times.

As far as the brakes... I think that you can change them back to 4 X 100 on the front but not sure... I think however that the hubs are smaller and are weaker, I would keep the 4 X 108 even though it is probably more difficult to find wheels. We have Audi Coupe's and have to keep the 4 X 100 bolt pattern http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/frown.gif

RST: thanks about the hub question. I know the earlier hubs are weaker, but a pain to find decent(non-Audi)/lighter wheels. Again just exploring options.

We love racing against you and Don. We were a little sad that you were not at the last Pocono event??? Anyway we just don't have the funds to get the cars all the way down their, unless of course someone wants to send us some extra cash!!! LOL

If it was still a NARRC event then we probably would be maxing out the credit cards to go but it isn't, so we have been advised by our wallets to stay home.

We will certinally join in for a "hub inspection" party at any event we are at!!! When are you coming to Lime Rock this year???

So you guys know that all of the first gen rx7's and Zcars have the same setup. We used a spacer for years between the strut and ball joint to correct arm and steering geometry that was screwed up with lowered springs. This has been challenged and upheld as legal.
