1981 VW siccrocco, bunch of questions

Hey guys, i was pointed to this fourm for help getting info on this car. any info would be much appreciated as i only hae experience with Hondas http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif
I am thinking about buying a 1981 VW siccrocco
The chassis has 300,000km. It has been a race car since 1990, first as an ITA car, then the current owner has set it up for Rally. So it has been garage kept since 1990, no rust it was all taken cae of in 1995. It won it;s class once in 9 rally, 2 DNFs (first rally origonal motor died, secnd DNF he went of and bent a control arm
How reliable and easy to work on are these cars?
Should i check the regluar stuff as if i was buying a street car or is there anyhting else is hould check for on a car that has had 13 years of racing?
Hows the price (remember candian $$$ and it;s hard to find a fully preppred car for slae around here like this)

Looks good, except for the 14" rims and the "gravel" tires.

You most likely are going to have to change the suspension setup for road racing vs rally. Rally like lots of ground clearance.

Watch out for the "reinforced control arms". They might not be legal in ITC.

Check for straightness in the chassis, and fluid leaks from the engine / tranny.

What's $3,900 CDN in USD ?

I wanted some opions on the car itself, reliablity, easy to workon, easy to find parts that kinda thing, and if the price was alright

$3900 CAN is about $2700 US

Oh, A1 cars are real easy to maintain, plenty of parts, (Shine Racing, BSI Racing, etc) and there are lots of used parts places as well.

I can send you a whole bunch of bookmarks if you want.

The one thing is the rust. I don't have may rust on my 81 Rabbit, but I'm in California. I understand that A1 shells are getting pretty scarce on the East Coast.

The rust on this one was taken care of in 1995, new front fedners and rear fenders. He says th chassis is solid

However, this car is not legal for SCCA IT racing with its current motor. 1981's came from the factory with the 1.7 motor (which puts it in ITB). This car has had the earlier motor (a 1.6) put in it. However, if you add a fuel cell, you could run Production or get a 1.7 head and be legal in ITB. The third and final choice is run it in ITC(cheat) with the rest of the 1.6 VW's and hope no one checks the VIN number.

BEM, the head is the same in the 1.6 and 1.7. The difference is in the crank. The 1.7 had a longer stroke but had the same bore as the 1.6

Well i checked out teh car and teh front strut towers need reinforced, i guess froma ll the abuse they are seperating.
Not a big deal i can do that myself
Only a couple tiny rust bubles on the rear fender.

Main problem is i am 6'1 and i just plain could not fit with the stock seat. I was right up against the steering wheel and my head 2inches off the roof.
with a race seat i would be fine i think

Beucase of that i offered $3000 CAN , he wants to hold out for more so if nobody else ofers more int he next 2 weeks he is going to call

I'm 6'3" and with my clubman seat in my old Scirocco, I had all kinds of leg room.

There is more leg room in a Scirocco than in a Rabbit.

I've raced both.

really? Thats good to know. This car has 84 Siccrocco seats ( i think he said 84) they are mounted really close to the steering wheel and really high up cuase he is jsut a wee feller http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif

Congrats on getting a car, and good luck w/ it!

I think you're going to be in for a surprise when you go to get TRD stuff. Several years ago when I raced an AW11 MR2 (same vintage as your GTS, same motor), I called TRD. I developed quite a relationship w/ one of their tech guys. Problem is, there's not much available for those cars, especially performane wise. Some things like the LSD and different R&P sets had to come from TRD of Japan, took weeks to get, and were stupid expensive. Other things, like the TRD cams, you can't use in IT.

You should check to see if Toyota is still running their support program. I used to be able to get stock parts for ~1/2 of dealer list, w/ free shipping. Not sure if this program is still in place.
