I have been looking for specs on vw cams and really have been able to find anything. Question is: are the hydraulic cams interchangable? I know the solid lifter cams are different from the hydraulic. Would it be okay to use a cam out of a GX small valve head in a RV/PF big valve head? thanks

Unless they're the same cam, no. See the update/backdate and 'complete assembly' rules.

And yes, you can't swap a solid lifter cam w/ a hydraulic lifter one. As a question, where did you get those codes (GX, RV, etc.) from? I've been a VW guy a long time, and I've never seen those codes.

Bill,

Every different VW engine configuration has its own code, i.e. for 1.8L: the JH (as you know) is a solid lifter, big valve, 8.5 comp, CIS engine. The GX is a hydr lifter, small valve, 9.0 comp, CIS/CIS E engine and the RV/PF are hydr lifter, big valve, 10.0 comp, Digifant engines.

The big valve, hydr lifter heads were used on the Golf GTI's and I wasn't thinking in terms of updating/backdating but whether, technically, the cams between the different valve style hydraulic heads were interchangable or were they even the same cam..

I have a spread sheets that details the different engine codes and tranny codes that I would be glad to email to you if you are interested. Just let me know your email.

thanks

Yeah, I guess I've spent too many years in the A1 GTI. I thought the A2 1.8 big-valve, high-comp engines were RD and HT???

And by all means, please send me the list.

Could I get in on this deal? Sounds like a potentially useful addition to the library!

Sounds like this would be a great thing to put in an archive somewhere. Maybe that's another good suggestion for this place, a section w/ tech articles, how-to's, and other such goodies.

Oh webmaster, are you there????
