Head and Neck Restraint Raffle!!

Thanks to generous donations, I am happy to announce a raffle for (3) head and neck restraint systems. Gregg Baker has donated (1) Isaac Intermediate system ( http://www.isaacdirect.com ) and Jay Wright has donated (2) different systems.

This shall be a limited ticket raffle, broken down in the following manner:

1) $50 per entry for the Isaac Intermediate Device. Multiple entries are allowed. Maximum of 100 entries in the raffle.

2) $30 per entry for a Wright Device Pro. Multiple entries are allowed. Maximum of 100 entries in the raffle.

3) $20 per entry for a Wright Device Shoulder Harness. Multiple entries are allowed. Maximum of 100 entries.

All money raised will be donated to Jay Wright and Over 40 Racing for SFI testing of the Wright Device. For more information on this, or for a breakdown of how the money was used, visit http://www.over40racing.com.

Additionally, donations shall be accepted directly if you would prefer that route instead.

To enter, simply PayPal ( http://www.paypal.com ) the appropriate fee to planet6racing (at) yahoo (dot) com and indicate in the subject/note area which raffle and how many entries you would like. If you are making a donation without entry into the raffle, just indicate that as well and I will take care of it. I will keep a running tally of the money earned in this thread and who is entered in what raffle.

A note about CC payments: Paypal does take a certain percentage out for them. So, the running total may not be reflective of the total of the donations as PayPal is taking their cut.

Drawing to be held on March 31, 2005 at 9:00 pm CST! Winners shall be notified by e-mail and posted here.

Thank you!!

Running Total: $2,777.29

Well, Gregg upped the "ante" for this program:

Gregg Baker, in another thread, wrote:

So here is what we will do: We will donate $1,250 cash to Jay's SFI efforts, and we will contribute one Isaac Intermediate system ($895 value) to be raffled off with all proceeds contributed to Jay's test fund.

Yes, that's right, there is a FREE Isaac Intermediate on the line! Donate whatever you feel is appropriate and get your chance to own one of these great devices!

Jay,

Unfortunately, this subject is on more than one thread.

Just so everyone is clear, our offer is to fund 1/2 the cost of one test. That's $1,250. There's still $6K+ to go.

OK, lets be like SCCA and get a GCR on this..

If I donate any amount, do I get a raffle ticket?

How about if I donate $15 I get one ticket, and if I hit the $50 mark I get 4 tickets?
(and abviously 2 for 30, etc, the "carrot" being $50...)

(I used the 15 amount as Willim Trainer has already opted in at that level)

Results must be 3200 N or less for frontal tests. If test fails to meet requirement a third frontal test is required and none of the values will be above 4000 N.

Yes, I saw that. But something about it doesn't make sense. It references the NASCAR...Oops, no it doesn't. I just checked and the entire page has changed. Hmm.

Anyway, I'm not surprised the numbers are similar, but I am surprised they are so high. That's only 200N below the threshold called for in the spec and the HLR is too low.

Great job David! Must race a 510??

Dave Gomberg
03-21-2005, 01:07 AM
No, I don't drive a 510, I race a DSR. 510 was simply the closest number to 500 evenly divisible by 30.

The reason I made the donation is really quite simple. I was a fairly early adopter of the Wright Device. Based on the earlier tests that Jay had run, I think it is effective and its cost is easily within reach of any club racer. My concern is that sooner or later SCCA will do more than recommend a head and neck restraint meeting the SFI requirements. I believe that eventually, it will become mandatory. When that time comes, I want club racers to have a wide range of choices.

Even though my donation is more than the price of a Wright Device, it is much less than any current alternative. $500 is about half of what I have saved over most of the alternatives, so I'm still ahead and (if more of you will help out) I'll still be able to use it when SFI certification becomes mandatory.

As an aside, there is an opportunity for those whose budgets preclude donating to make a contribution.

As readers may or may not know, Jay is wheelchair-bound as the result of a neck injury he suffered while racing. Consequently, travel is difficult for him and he could use a volunteer to monitor the test. I have offered to do this, schedule permitting, but it would be wise to have a backup if my calendar gets jammed or I otherwise become unavailable.

Of course, it never hurts to have a helping hand around so if Mr./Ms. backup wants to tag along to one of the world's newest crash labs I'm certain they would find it worth the trip to Vandalia, OH (north of Dayton).

A technical background isn't necessary, but it would help.

Thanks Dave.

BTW, since you are more familiar with the use of Jay's design than we are, feel free to come along. We helped the lab personnel put the product on the dummy at the Wayne State Bioengineering Center lab, but the wiring of the load sensors got in the way of some of the straps. It simulated a worse-case condition but did not do justice to Jay's work. Your presence would be valuable.

Besides, one should never pass up a chance to see a crash test, especially if it is their first.

First, let me apologize for not doing this last night. I got completely tied up in another project (also for the IT.com Community) that I completely forgot about it!!

So, without further ado, THE WINNERS ARE:

David Gomberg - Wright Pro Device

Dave Zaslow - Wright Shoulder Device

The drawing was supervised by my peers at Rexnord Technical Services and the names were drawn by an associate (i.e. not me).

Thank you to everyone who participated! Your contributions are very much appreciated!

Before this goes too far, I should note that there may be a limit to the number of observers allowed at the Delphi lab (never asked).

The idea of a large crowd standing around watching a metal object hurl through space at a high rate of speed, followed by a rapid dispersion of kinetic energy (i.e. crash), cannot give the insurance carrier the warm fuzzies.

Jay,

Here's a thought: Let's hit it right now! Seriously! Three tests at $2,500 each, but there is no requirement to perform all three tests at the same session.

Thanks to eveyone's generosity we have enough funds for one test, so let's do the worse-case impact. If you get under 4,000N on the 30 deg offset frontal you are golden, i.e. the straight frontal should be easy.

Jay,

I can be there Wednesday PM. I believe it would be very helpful if one of your users were there also. While I am generally familiar with your design, someone with day-to-day knowledge could prove useful.

From a logistics standpoint, it would be best if you shipped directly to the lab. I'd be happy to hand carry everything for you, but I'm concerned that baggage handlers or TSA may foul things up. Your choice.

Also, please pass on contact info for Delphi and any SFI folks who will be there.

I think it would be great if others observed, but you may need to clear this with Delphi. They may draw the line somewhere between 6 and 60.
