Ever have one of those moments when you simply cannot grab the camera fast enough?

We were in Daytona for Speed Weeks, headed for a little oceanside restaurant in the town of Ponce Inlet, which is notorious for nabbing speeders. It's a classic scene: The cop's writing while the driver is waiving his arms, trying to talk himself out of a ticket. No big deal, until I catch a glimpse of the graphic on the side of his truck.

I mash the brakes, make an illegal U-turn, finally find the camera in the back, jump back in the driver's seat and hit the gas. (Seat belt, what seat belt?)

As I approach the scene I see the truck pulling away from the squad car. Having no time to check the camera settings--and hoping the flash is off (wrong!)--I hang out the window and get the shot.

If we were only 30 seconds sooner...

Ahhh...tough life..I see the network has really been watching the frivolous spending!

of course, it's probably all part of a advertising comp deal, but still!

Nice nabb, Gregg!

My thought also. One guy in a chromed-up dually looking for a burger. He could have at least brought a camera man with him.

Sorry for the late time. It was on at 3:20 CST. I just saw it. I don't know if it will be on again. Dave D wondered if the driver was going to "slide it by" the bosses?

Well I'll be. Yup, there it is!

About 1:20 into a two hour broadcast. Just saw it. Despain was pretty funny--something about whether the unidentified employee thought he could get the ticket on his expense account.

No credits were given, Bill. Hmmm. I wonder if they snagged the shot from our site or yours. Hey Bill, here's a thought: since we have this on tape, perhaps we could "resnag" it for posting.

It was rather amusing.

BTW, for those who are curious, my duties here at Isaac, LLC require unbounded diligence in the areas of research and development. Hence, SpeedTV in my office. Hey, it's a tough job but someone's gotta do it.

I sent the following off to Despain, on a lark:

Dave,

I'm delighted that you used my photo last night as motivation for a photo submission idea for the program. It's a chance for Speed TV viewers to offer up some of their best work and should make for a real grin. The shot of one of your guys getting nabbed for speeding by the Ponce Inlet Police Department (PIPD in our lingo) was classic.

But gee Dave, I went through several marginally legal maneuvers to get that shot, beginning with a U-turn on A1A. So how about a little credit?

And this turns up as a reply tonight:

^ congrats dude, you got a mention on Wind Tunnel!

Did anyone see this?

Dude, you got a bobblehead! NOW you've made the bigtime!

Dave admitted the error, and said, "First of all Gregg, I don't think a U-turn on A1A is even marginally legal, but we screwed up, so, to make it up to you, email us your mailing address and we'll send you a bobblehead."

You get around don't you!? I thought you were in Orlando, and A1A, IIRC isn't anywhere near Orlando...

Next time, try to make sure an Isaac sticker is on your drivers side door mirror as that was your only chance at a shameless self promo....

Huh? Thanks, but I don't see the thread, here or there. I'll check tomorrow.

Well, it sounds like I'm going to get a Dave Despain bobblehead doll.

Which is only appropriate. After all, it's a calm Sunday night, all is well with the world; dogs are snoring, cats are purring, off to bed to delve into a good book and--fool that I am--I figure one last check on e-mail and such.

So what do I get? A bobblehead doll.

Seriously Dave, if you are yet another IT lurker, thanks!

Right. A1A is as far east as you can go and not get wet.

I would never be so crass as to do something like that. A Dave Despain bobblehead doll is much more rewarding. Hey, I'm being honest here. See? No smilie.

Thanks Dave!

Actually, the other possibility for self-promotion is to put your signature on the bottom of the post on the message board, or better yet, send some info to Despain on the current situation with SFI testing. He might be interested...

This, hopefully, is the last word:

Dave,

Thanks for the bobblehead doll! I will treasure it always. Just send that baby to the address listed below.

This exchange has been a grin around here. Thanks for the Yuks. If I ever get a bobblehead doll made in my own likeness, you'll be the first to get one. I'll get the better end of that deal--I am not nearly as handsome as you are. http://ITForum.ImprovedTouring.com/wink.gif

Thanks again!

Guess what showed up at the office?

http://www.isaacdirect.com/images/Humor/Despain/Bobblehead.JPG

But this is after we unwrapped it. Guess what was originally wrapped around his neck?

http://www.isaacdirect.com/images/Humor/Despain/WithCollar.JPG

That's right, a horse collar. Here's a close up:

http://www.isaacdirect.com/images/Humor/Despain/Closeup.JPG

For a public figure in the racing community to display such a lack of head and neck protection sets a very poor example for racers everywhere.

And look what happens when we take off the collar and shake Dave around. His head bobbles!! Floppin' this way, floppin' that way--and not anywhere near 50Gs either. Why, I'll bet if we dropped Dave on the floor his head would pop off and roll down the hall.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is unacceptable. Dave needs head and neck protection and we're just the guys to do it. Therefore, in the interest of racer safety worldwide, we are announcing the Save Dave's Neck Miniature Isaac Modelling Contest. The winner receives a free Intermediate Isaac system valued at $895!

All you have to do is upgrade Dave's safety gear to include harness, helmet, and, of course, an Isaac system. We'll need to get detailed dimensions for the helmet but Dave's doll measures 8" in height with the head being 2.75" tall. (Dave has a big head.) In the meantime, get your raw materials ready and prepare to impress!

The winning design, or a copy of it, will become the property of Isaac, LLC and reside atop Dave's bobblehead.

Bobblehead indeed. Not if we can help it!

But it's harder to model an Isaac on Dave than it would be to do one of the "other guys' systems," since most of the Isaac stayed in his Bobblemobile when he got out.

I guess we just need to model a helmet with Isaac fittings? http://ITForum.ImprovedTouring.com/smile.gif

We were thinking more along the lines of full racing regalia, i.e.harness, helmet, Isaac shocks and helmet with mount.

Red belting to contrast with the black shirt would look good. Perhaps an eggshell for the helmet, with little tubular thingys for Isaac dampers.
