This just hit me, but anyone out there have an xbox and play project gotham racing 2? It has a cool online multiplayer deal where you can race folks from all over the place or you can add your pals and race against people you know. I might be getting myself into more than I asked for, but my gamer tag is Bendretti, if anyone else wants to post theirs maybe we can meet up and race. It should would be fun racing against people you KNOW can race a car.

Yep, I'm a nerd, but boy is it fun.

Ben.

Ben,

I haven't made the jump to X-box Live yet (and believe me, the kids are VERY persistent). But on another site I've also seen guys in I.T. scheduling races on "Toca Racing Driver 2". Every tried it? (I haven't had a chance to use Project Gotham yet)

For those of us equally-nerdy but less informed, is X-Box Live just another $X / month on top of your high-speed internet bill?

Yep, xbox live is a service fee, you can go montly or for the year. Some games even come with a free couple months. 12 months is like $50 bucks.

I'll go into a little more description for those who are interested because I still think this is amazing. You plug your network cable into your xbox and it's just like a computer, sometimes gets updates and you can play online. The thing I like about xbox compared to playstation is that all games that have an online fuction for xbox must use microsofts Live. On the playstation you might have to pay each game for their individual online service, xbox you don't have that. The other thing is you get a "gamer tag". It's your name for every game you play. "The man" (bill) keeps track of how you do in each game and therefore can set you up with matches vs. people who are good as you.

Mr. Gates has gone as far as to provide Xbox stuff in the MSN messenger so I can actually see what my friends are playing using messenger and they, from their xbox, can invite me to play a game through messenger. Just plain nuts.

You also can wear the head set, which is meant specifically to make anyone else in the room laugh at you, and talk to all the people you are playing. Good for trash talking.

I haven't played TOCA yet, but it looks cool. I think the one thing PGR2 lacks is a real race track, but it is still a great game. Sorry for the long write, but I just got mine like a couple months ago and I still think it's cool.

There's a different I.T. site?

(I always feel like I farted in a crowded elevator when I mention it, but before I bought my car I wasn't sure what I was going to get. I hung out both here and at http://www.specmiata.com [heretofor known as "The S Word"])

While an SM is built to slightly different rules than an ITA Miata, lots of the threads are not specifically SM-related.

And no matter what you drive, there are LOTS of good videos at http://www.specmiatavideos.com

OK, that's it. No more "S" word....

How about "Pong", in black and white? Ya know, like those big consoles they used to have in bars. 25 cents per game.

(Is that a grey hair I see in the mirror? Nah!)

Hey Ben,

Haven't jumped to an Xbox... the only reason I bought a PS1, and then a PS2 was for GranTurismo 1, 2 and 3.
W/ three I've held "competitions" in my basement... loads of fun... yep I'm a nerd. http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif

Ya, GT is a great game. The deal that swayed me to the xbox was it's online fuctionality and that the system isn't maxed out yet performance wise. I've heard that the playstation is pretty much topped out. Still got to love gran turismo though.

Yep, great single player FPS. It is a retelling of the story from the original Doom. Awesome new engine.

I have an XBox and Project Gotham 2. I also have a PS2 with all the Gran Turismos and I've played a lot of the other racing games out there as well.

Project Gotham is cool, but the racing experience isn't as realistic as GT3. The Nurburgring track is pretty amazing. There's a new XBox game coming out called Forza Motorsport that looks like it might be a GT4 competitor. I hope it is, because XBox Live is awesome, and online play is the only thing missing from the GT series.

Also Toca Race Driver 2 is supposed to be good. I haven't played it, but I own the first one and it's great.

I just moved, so I don't have my XBox setup plugged in yet. But I will in the next couple of days. We should hook up online, because it would be cool to play with someone who's into real racing, and who's not a 13 year-old jackass.

I'm DrinkyCrow online, btw.

You young kids have no idea of how good you got it. Why when I was young all we had was Atari....AND WE LIKED IT BY GUM, 16 colors and all. One little speaker no saved games no do over's if you got hit with a barrel by the monkey that was it. Then we got the 2600 WOW we could buy cartridges and play different games all in fantastic 16 color graphics. http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif

But to tell the truth when I was in 6th grade we had a pong tournament, the entire school. AHHHH the good old days.

Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

No a-days they have Halo tournys. They get 4 xbox's together, 4 people each, each xbox connected to a projector, all in a big room. Pretty crazy stuff.

I agree with you Scooter about PGR 2 being not so much a "racing" game and that's what I miss about it. It's fun, but I miss the real tracks, colored curbing, all that stuff. I've heard good things about toca 2. Sounds like you can actually get damaged, over rev your engine, hits cause problems, blah blah blah. Sounds good to me! And yes, the 13 year old kid dive bombing into every corner gets annoying.

Slightly OT, but what PC-based game would you guys recommend for the hurricane bunker? You know, something that would operate stand alone (no comm) and would not put too much strain on the backup generator? http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/wink.gif

I work at a game company, and we're having a company party today. We'll be hooking up a bunch of XBoxes and playing whatever. Should be geeky/fun.

I just put the first Pro Race Driver in to check it out again, and it's not too bad. It's needs a steering wheel and the graphics are pretty cave-man. I'll bet TOCA Race Driver 2 is worth a buy.

Does the XBox have a good force-feedback steering wheel? Because that makes a HUGE difference in game experience on GT3. I hear GT4 is going to be released with a new wheel that supposed to be pretty nice.

GT3/4 is the kind of game that you can actually practice driving on. I wish they'd make a very realistic game that you could download your local tracks to. I would drive the Portland I.R. and Pacific Raceways tracks day and night.

TOCA 2 RCD is VERY good! I just completed it last week. Between it and Halo (I just bought my X about a month ago), I may never get any sleep. The DTM and Aussie V8 Supercars make this game, along with all the real tracks make it a must buy. The only real US road racing tracks are Road America and Laguna Seca tho'. There are three different configurations of a street course in Detroit (not even close to the Grand Prix course), and ovals Texas Motor Speedway and Pikes Peak.

If I ever get high speed, look for RacerFink...
