Finally got around to putting a durometer to the Avons yesterday. The Avons have only been used for autocrossing with my turbo Miata so far and have two events on them. They read a pretty consistent 48 across the tire.

For comparison I had a Hoosier R3S03 with 4 heat cycles off my ITS RX-7. The Hoosiers showed 58-60 which is right where we usually find them with that number of heat cycles.

I also had a new pair of Nitto 555R DOT drag radials there and they showed a 45 FWIW.

Obviously this is not a direct, new tire, apples to apples comparison but both tires have been cycled a bit and I still feel the Avon will show a slightly softer compound whether new or used. Who's gonna try them? I want some feedback. http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif

Anyone have ANY info or links to online info about these new tires?

All I found was this so far:

They look an awful lot like the new Hoosiers. They also seem to be about the same price.

They are definitely less money than the Hoosiers.

Interesting Chris, but keep in mind that you are comparing an autocross tire with a race tire.

What are the durometer readings on Hoosiers comparable autocross tire?

It's not an autocross tire. It's a road race tire being used in an autocross application.

The Tire Rack ad link is a bit misleading.....

Avon Tyres Tech R radials feature an attractive, graphic sidewall design with black letters and include a "rim recess" design on all sizes. They are Z-speed rated and available in 60-, 55-, 50-, 45-, 40, 35-, and 30-series sizes for 13" to 18" wheel diameters.

They say they offer tires ranging from 13" to 17" but their pricing guide and spec page only lists tires in the 14" to 16" range.

Do they eventually plan to offer 13" tires?

Sorry, after a comparison they are about $20 cheaper a tire than the Hoosiers. This is at least at Tirerack.com. I was looking at Tirerack.com prices for the Avon's, and was comparing them to what I paid this weekend for Hoosiers.

Sorry Chris, I stand corrected.

I wonder how they do over the long haul.

Chris, I don't know why you are worried about roadrace tires after your USAC Silver Crown test went so well. You did a heck of a job.
