It is indeed a Supermodified. I spent many a Saturday night at Oswego Speedway (The Home of the Supermodifieds) some 25 years ago. It's still the one circle track car I'd go see anywhere. I also still prefer the wingless versions they race at Oswego to the ISMA Supers.

I like the non-winged Supers too; the big wings on the ISMA cars disguise a lot of handling issues.

I actually help out a number of the Modified teams.

Supers are, in a word...Super.

I didn't get to see a lot of them until I moved up here. I see them at Toledo Speedway, and sometimes make the drive to Sandusky.

I used to see one of them parked on a trailer along Blalock between Old Katy Road and Westview from time to time, but I neverr could go see them race. It was too far to get to the tracks away from Houston, and I didn't have any wheels, and hoof borne transportation is too slow.

Actually, anything that remotely resembles a race car gets my gearhead spinning.

How about someone updating the picture page on this site?

hmmm.... I don't have my GCR here with me so I'm wondering if they also included a definition of a corner. Seems that, based on that definition, you could still have a vehicle with 3 wheels on one side and 1 on the other.

A corner was defined: Left Front, Right Front, Right Rear, and Left Rear. I guess the guy wjho built it got so discouraged that he sold off the engine and drive axle, etc., and cut up the frame. Too bad. It would have been cool at a vintage oval racers meet or in a museum.

Went and watched the ISMA Supers at Flemington every time they were there. That's just an amazing show! Two of the times they were there, they ran as part of the Sat. night show, and I was in the pits crewing for my buddy's Late Model. I've got some great up-close pics of some of the Supers. Got to meet Bentley Warren, what a guy!!! I've never seen the wingless versions run, but I'm sure they're impressive as hell. The ISMA cars are just un-Godly fast! They set a new asphalt record at Flemington at over 152mph!!! That's on a 5/8th mile low bank oval! http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/eek.gif

Which ones? I have friends I raced karts with who have run Modifieds.

I raced with Kent Peckham (his family has been in racing a long time and his uncle Darrell or Daryl) used to race supers.

My former lawyer (Dan Schum) used to own a limited modified when his son (Scott) raced and when his son quit he put Todd Burley behind the wheel. Last I heard he was co-owner of the team running Jan Leaty.

Mark, do you have any idea where they race supers in Texas - especially anywhere around Houston? I knew they at least did race in Texas because when I was in high school Chet Fillip came up to Oswego once or twice and I knew he was from Texas.

God, I really miss Oswego. And yes, I admit it, I have a methanol problem. I love the smell of burning methonal. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/smile.gif I went to a local dirt track in Cleveland, TX a few weeks back and they had sprint cars there and a few times I could smell the methanol (although nothing like walking up to the track at Oswego when the supers are running) and it brought back very fond memories instantly.

Oh man, you're killing me. There are just a few things I really miss about Upstate NY and WGI and the Oswego supers are a couple of them.

Make that a nice fall weekend with changing colors and I'd think I died and went to heaven.

Speaking of which, the first time I went to Oswego I was a kid and Jim Shampine won. Got to see him race many times. His death is one that still weighs heavily on me today.

As a guy who went to school in Rochester, I submit your memory is painting a prettier picture than was really present.

The first 40 (not kiding) days I was there, it rained every day. Sometimes hard, sometimes just a sprinkle, but it didn't miss a day. And sure the fall colors came, and went...in a day, as they were ripped off the trees by the 30 mile an hour winds and the driving rain!

Then it started to snow!

(But being IN the garage, and getting soaked in champaign in the Renault garage when they won the F1 World Championship that year at the Glen was pretty cool!)

I don't know where they race Supermodifieds in Texas. You might try the track over by San Antonio, or maybe at Corpus. Anywhere you go, it will be a little bit of a drive from the Big H. I used to go over to Big H motor Speedway to watch the World of Outlaws. They would send up a cloud of alky fumes (methanol) and little clay worms...it was great. I guess they paved Big H.

Try doing a web search for supermodifieds, and especially look for the Western Supermodified Association. That might get you there.

I can't help much because I moved up here to DeeTroit in 1986. And I have hated every minute of it. It is always cold. Or raining. OR SNOWING! And the rodeos are hard to find, and the stock is weak. And the roads suck. And there is only one country station in town, and it doesn't play country. ...If you see me looking down, I'm just trying to hide this frown, 'cause I can't see Texas from here!....

By the way George, I believe Chet Fillip is from Midland or some where around there. He and his Dad uset to run a huge oval trac parts place and they put out a catalog. It was called the big book of (someting or other about racing parts). They took an Eagle to Indy in the early 80s. I dont think they qualified. They later had a Bad Ass dirt late model. I think they used some parts from the Eagle.

Try looking in a Speedway directory. There might be one online.

I'll try that.

A team I hung out with at Oswego (Ron Buckner - owner, Chuck Ciprich - driver) went to Indy as well in 80. They didn't have any better luck. I think Ciprich was replaced with a veteran driver and eventually qualified but was one of the first out.

Chet Filip drove a Consulier in, I think it was an IMSA series in the 80s. He is now driving USAC Sprints and Silver Crown cars. A good example of how tough it is to make it in racing.

I had a friend who was an engineer on an Indy car effort in the late 80s-early 90s. They qualified, but didn't run all that great.

Don't tell the kickers, but racing is better than their game! God, I love the adrenaline sports!

The good news about where Rochester is that it misses much of the lake effect snow that the rest of upstate towards Syracuse gets. For Rochester to get hit there needs to be southerly winds coming off Lake Ontario.... if there ain't, well ya only get a couple of inches.

Now if you want to talk about wild.... ice storm of 89(or was it 90? hmmm) is about as wild as you get. Temps started mid 30's, HEAVY rain all day... then at night temps dropped to well below freezing. Whole damned city was coated in ice.... beautiful but destructive. I do miss Amerks hockey, REAL apple cider(this crap down here ain't good) and Zweigle's redhots.

I still have fond feelings for Rochester. I go back once a year in February (of all times). But I'll tell you, it's nice not having to replace an entire exhaust every other year and have cars not deteriorate. I can't imagine ever moving back, but I do like to visit.

That was 91. It was the year I got married the first time. Come to think of it, my ex-wife must have frozen the city. http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/wink.gif That was indeed wild. The place I was living was without power for two weeks. I lived all that time with a friend who lost his cable for all of 20 minutes.

I agree... I don't wanna go back. Kinda amazed after driving in Atlanta to go driving in that area... you can actually get on the highways at 4:45 PM without coming close to stop and go traffic(normally).

HA! Good ole shoot the moose.... that was some good fun. I wish we could get an AHL team nearby, would be cool as hell down here and rooting for the Amerks. About as much fun as going to the Isles/Thrashers games and rooting for the Islanders... get all kinds of heckling and piss people off to no end. Missed the first game 'cause of Petit but will try to make the January game, it'll be better 'cause I'll my Isles customized 3rd jersey http://Forums.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif We do have an ECHL team now which is sweet... AFFORDABLE hockey is back! Love 20 bucks for the bottom level.

True Amerks fans traveled. Best party town in the AHL ? Glens Falls. Really. Even the players agree. Bars open til 4am..best bands always at Sandy's Clam Bar. 2nd best ? Tie between Portland and Baltimore. Worst ? Hershey. Yikes...what a hole...'Newmarket' with chocolate.
