It was a good race. I started 14th after motor trouble during qualifying. Melted my plugs and had to reset the timing - motor ran like crap. The race was a good clean start from my view, I ran up to about 8th and then lost my brake pedal going into big bend - Carl B did a nice job dodging me as I went down the escape route. I pumped up the brakes and went back out, seemed to have some pedal, so took it a little carefully the rest of the race and worked my way up to 7th to finish. I know Nick and John tangled coming out of big bend for the lead and John took the win. Jeff Henerderson was leading the race when his motor blew - major bummer for him. Rob Driscoll took second and is looking very strong for the championship right now and Ed "the Tizzer" Tisdale came in an excellent third - a great finish. I teased him he's starting to pull away from me in the points!

Final mention - the new engine was bone dry at the end. When I parked it I saw the last quart of oil drain onto the ground. Guages all looked good driving back to paddock but SH*T. I will be have a "conversation" with my race shop this AM. Had to calm down for a day before I call.

Karl - do you have the final results? I just looked at the provisionals. Dropped off the car last night and we'll see if the motor is toast.

ITS/ITB race...

Hummm...

I was very surprised that my brother, Scott Carlson and I would have qualified mid pack in ITS!!! In the race results Stephen and Scott would have finished near the top. RX-7's and BMW's were the only car to finish ahead in qualifying and the race. They all could have their own spec classes there is so many of them!!! Anyway good racing, somewhat clean group from my perspective, although I think a few of the ITS cars need a few lessons on passing slower cars, in qualifying and in the race. You all need to realize you have at least 50hp more than us little ITB cars, we are the slowest of all IT classes ( I find it amazing that ITC cars are faster than us, but that I will keep my comments to myself http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/wink.gif ).

Keep it safe; there were a few close calls and one unfortunate incident. When we are in deep battle also so make sure we see you before you make a crazy move!!!

Also to support the ITS guys, and even a lot of the faster ITB guys... newbies, stay on line, but leave racing room... no need to drive the center of the track and make it difficult for people to pass... if you stay on your line, your race is "unaffected" and so is ours as we can easily move past. If you stay in the middle you make a huge traffic jam that is very very dangerous for everyone behind you. If you need help learning the line ask someone for the help, before going on the track. All of the racers (I would hope) are willing to help.

Raymond,
The only reason ITC cars are maybe a little faster is because of the type of track Lime Rock is, momentum. I know in my car I was basically flatout from the left hander to Big Bend on a really good day (I think I had one really good day there in 4 years) and a slight lift at West bend on a not so good day. You guys have to at least lift at the uphill and at west bend that is a lot of momentum lost right there. just my humble opionion though, and since I haven't been out tehre in 2 plus years I don't knw what is going on now.

I think it takes 2 to tango and the ITB guys, if you relaize you are the slowest group, should also have a re-fresher course in paying attention to your mirrors...Just becuae the GCR mandates that it is the responsibility of the overtaking car to make a safe pass, doesn't mean you can be oblivious when the front runners are coming through......

So here's what I want to know:

- how in the heck did Mark Gregory pick up so much time? Nice job!
- how come Ed T. lost so much time?
- 1:04s, Ben?
- Nick, what's up? 10th place...? Traffic, accident, mind on your pending World Challenge race?
- What happened to Joe DiMinno? One of us has got to do well, man!
- ITB cars 7th and 8th overall?!?!?!? Hey, Ben, they have "ITB" written on the side; you know, where your tire marks usually go? <grin>
- Wazzup with Henderson and Sabatello? both off on Lap 13...story there?
- Who in the hell is going to beat those Auto Technic cars???
- Tim Mullen: DNF in the new car? Wuh happened?

Man, I don't go to one race, and the whole world goes to hell...

Nick qualified first and went around Big Bend on lap one in 2nd when Henderson rocketed by on teh straight.

Nick was spun out from behind in Big Bend, had to wait to get back on and then charged through the field to finish where he did.

Hendo was leading, running HARD and then blew up.

- Tim Mullen: DNF in the new car? Wuh happened?

Greg A - I will explain when next I see you. But suffice to say, a banzai move by an ITS midpacker (I think) in the downhill put me in a "no win" situation. I ended up first on one side of the track, then on the other side of the track into the tire wall. Couldn't get it re-fired, and got to watch the rest of the race. --- just wish the ITS had waited for the straight - it would have made a lot more sense than the chance he took at the Downhill. Oh, and he continued on.

We did miss you...

I got blocked by Sabatello for the first 3 laps as the leaders pulled away and then traffic began. Ran fast but never got a clean lap.

Mark was on a mission, he was in my mirrors the entire race.

As to the race, I was very impressed with the point-bys afforded me. Everyone was using the mirrors well. A lot is said of the entire group to have run without a full course yellow and only limited local yellows with that many cars in the race.

Sometimes the fast cars have to pass anywhere they can and can't wait for the straights because we are also racing for position.

Regarding the Tizzer:

For optimal New England effect, of course, you drop the terminal "r" when pronouncing this.

Examples:

"There goes the Tizza!"

"Tizza had a pissa lap!"

"Did Mahk get new tiyas, or what? He's all ova Tizza's bumpa!"

Hey, Tim, was the red Honda fading away in Doug's photo the one that you're referring to? Is this the same guy that was at NHIS?

If so, I do not want to make public comments other than to note that he was a novice in the driver's school at NHIS, and after watching him during the school and the race I meant to walk over and have a chat with him at the end of the day...I wish I had.

Well as far as the ITB cars finishing 7th and 8th.... we just ran clean and consistant! Me and Scott had a great race and went side by side in the uphill probably more times than we went single file! My fast race time was 3/4 of a second slower than qualifying because almost every lap we where side by side through at least one turn! We had a great race even though I ended up in slot #2 at the end. I think I led well over half the race but it only takes one lap to win. It was awesome to have two different types of cars that are faster at 2 different spots of the track. It was neat because we could each get along side of eachother at different spots. I guess that's what I like so much about IT.

As far as lap traffic goes... that's what ultimatly created the only passes that me and scott had with eachother. We completed only three passes on eachother and they all where a result of lap traffic in the downhill. Yes we where racing for that numero 1 position but we both wanted to race in a month without bodywork! For me I finished second because I didn't make that bonzai move in the downhill, but I also have no dents and a car I can again have fun with at the next race. It seems like more people are getting that mentality that we are here to have fun not to win at all costs! I thank everyone for that because those first two races of the year where terrible! 44 cars on track with ITB and ITS sounded like disaster but instead it turned out to be very good except for maybe tim's incident. I do have a couple of interesting things on video like an ITS BMW locking up the tires in the downhill in qualifying because at the last min he decided 3 wide was not going to work but overall I saw nothing to crazy! I think with some more practice in lap traffic I will be able to "use" them more to my advantage! I realized after watching my video that I should have lifted in the middle of west bend so me and scott both had to go very slow in the middle of that turn so we would have caught lap traffic at the exit of the downhill not in the middle of it.

Good job to everyone and I can't wait to have as much fun in the next event! And when I say everyone I mean the drivers and definetly the organizors as well. The event went very smoothly!

I used to hate being passed on the down hill, but if done right it really shouldn't be a problem.

Some of us slower cars that often get passed also have some responsibility of where and when we'll be passed. For example, if I see one of the front running ITA cars coming up behind me I may lift a little at the top of the hill to all them to pass me in the straight of the down hill (obviously depends on the situation). That way the pass is done before the apex and I don't need to lift and lose the crucial momentum my car needs on the straight.

At the same time, people shouldn't be completely taking away the apex and doing bonzi moves on the apex of the down hill. Otherwise we both cars will go off the track. The slower car can often protect their line through the apex while not slowing the faster car up much and being safe.

All of this is said so generically and really depends a lot on the case by case senerio. And yes, I've been on the passing side of the spectrum going down the hill as well (especially when running in EMRA with some of the slower run groups). The faster car needs to set up the pass correctly as well. So I guess it really lies on both drivers.

I definately agree it is not worth being stupid about anywhere on the track. The first priority is to be safe and bring the car home without too much damage...then the plastic trophy.

Andy - it was a typo online. The garages are available and I booked next to you guys so I can spy on all that top secret Flatout stuff you guys do! http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/biggrin.gif

Test day is also open on Friday for $150.00

I also have a set of good Hoosiers for sale - about 6 heat cycles into them. 225/45/15 Anybody want 'em let me know and I'll bring. Looking for $450. They're last year's edition.
