I'm very new to IT racing it looks really fun and cost affordable is awsome. Can someone send me rules and what kind of car is best for a rookie to start with. Any info is greatly appriciated. Thank You

If you like racing you must be into cars... help us help you by telling us a little more about yourself... Like what is your top 3 favorite makes of cars?

Also their is 4 destinctive different IT classes, each has the same level of modification but to different cars. Each also has the same level of competition but with different price tags. Personally I think ITB is the biggest bang for the $$$, but I must admit I would like to go a little faster!!! ITS is the fastest but not necessarally more compeditive.

First order a GCR, that has all the rules and what cars are eligible. I think the most cost effective (cheapest) cars to run that are still competitive are Hondas and VWs.

Look seriously at renting a car at first. That way you can concentrate on learning to be a driver... rather than having to also learn to be a mechanic, tire changer, truck driver, fueler, and crew chief all at the same time.

Thanks for your reply Raymond. I've been around racing all my life, but it's all been oval tracks, dirt tracks mostly. As for myself I trun 40 this month and would like to get involved in road racing. I saw the Valvoline Run Offs at Mid Ohio on Speed channel. So I went to the SCCA web site to brouse and I saw the IT series and i thought I could build a car, but didn't have any knowledge on the class. I'm very mechanicly inclined and love to work on cars. My favorite cars are American made cars. That's all I have ever had and know litte about the import brands. So if you can recondmend a few cars and we can go from there. Thanks again Raymond and I hope we can talk again.

I am a fan of ITB as I think it is the best class for the $$$. A couple of dodge options for IT are as follows

ITB:
Dodge Charger- I have not seen any competitively built cars although others have said they have a chance.

Dodge Omni- Seems crazy but the 2.2L dodge Omni looks great on paper and one of them did very well at the IT unofficial "national championships" (ARRC). It placed 2nd and was DQ'd for not having door panels. That is the only one I have seen race, but I think it has a lot of potential.

ITS:
Dodge Neon- Not competitive from what I have seen or heard.

I am not looking at a GCR right now. I would imagine other Dodge products are classified. Maybe others can clue you in if they are good options.

Also if you prefer American cars Mustangs, Capri's, Escorts, and others are classified. You are in the Northeast so I would suggest going to the NER SCCA website and looking up the NARRC season results from the last season to see who/what’s already being raced. We built cars that were not being raced, but that is only because we have had a long history in SCCA. As a newbie I would not suggest racing anything to extreme (out of the ordinary) unless you love the car!!!

Building your own car/renting cars, buying a built car has always been a huge debate. I would love to see homes for "old" IT cars, but at the same time I do think it is more fun to build something from scratch if you have the talent/capability (may or may not be more expensive).

Marty--Check out the FORD group, above.

I race a Ford product (Lynx) and your other IT choices (domestic) in FORDS are the 4 cyl Mustang, 6 cyl Mustang, Contour, Escorts and Pintos.

I cannot race (or own) furrin vehicles, but do believe my prior post about the Honda.

Hi Marty,

I was also a cross over from the stock car wars! I had finally had enough of the full contact stock car world! I came to the SCCA with NO contacts-went to a few races-met some people-crewed for a SRF for a year (still doing that) Decided IT was the way to go! I was die hard V8 kind of guy! I am now driving a ITA Rx7-not only is this not V8 it's a rotary! I made this decision based on cost and dependabilty! I bought the car turn key for under $4,000.! I had built ALL my cars in the past (4 of them) I love to fabricate-weld-tweak-etc. I just could not even come close to building a car for what was put into my RX7! The RX7s are not as cometitive as some cars but you will always have a bunch of them at a race-gives you(me) a good idea of how good or bad you are doing! The 1st season I had my car I ran every auto X and hill climb I could! Also did a number of High performence driver schools-SCDA-This made the SCCA driver school a very nice experience! Jion the club-come to a few races!!
