My ignition switch is a real knee-knocker. I've killed the engine several times by bumping it. So now I've got a nice switch box sitting on the transmission tunnel with ACC, IGN, and START switches. Plugs into the wire harness where the ignition switch used to.

So can I remove the ignition switch / steering lock assembly? ITCS 17.1.4.D.10.b says "Steering lock mechanisms shall be removed." and 17.1.4.D.1.e says "Any spark plugs and ignition wires may be used." Since the ignition switch is part of the steering lock assy and ignition wires are open, I think I could make a case for it. "If it says you can,...". Sure is safer for my knees.

Thanks,

I do not think you can remove the switch itself. You MUST disable/remove the lock for the column, which is part of the switch assembly, according to the GCR. You are correct that you can use the stock harness by rewiring it into your switch panel. The wires for the distributor and spark plugs are 'free' items.
