Spherical Bearings

Does anyone know of a company that will build a custom spherical bearing? Specifically, I want to replace the stock rubber shift linkage bushings on my ITA CRX with bearings. The places I've looked mainly deal with large company orders. Thanks.

While I understand what you want to do, and why you want to do it, I don't know where it states, in the rules, that you're allowed to do it.

I haven't really measured it out, just wanted to know if it can be done. There are two bushings, one at the base of the shift rod and another at the end of the torque rod at the trans mount which is rather large.

If bushing material is not restricted, why would it not be legal?

Try www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com) and do a search on spherical bearings...be prepared to be dazzled...they have everything imaginable, including hex rod male and female threaded for suspension links (sway bar). maybe because the statement in the rules that bushing material is unrestricted is in the suspension section and does not apply to the shift mechanism?

That's unfortunate because there are a million illegal cars running around with urethane shift bushings.

...or even with tubular elements and spherical rod ends like a formula car. This came up in conversation this past weekend and - again - the presence of something doesn't make it legal.

Unfortunately I have to agree that this is an illegal modification. We wanted to do the same thing as in our cars the exhaust runs right next to and almost touches the linkage thus melting the stock bushings. Sucks when you can't shift anymore!!! We did find though that putting a heat shield between the linkage and the exhaust, it keeps everything happy http://ITForum.ImprovedTouring.com/smile.gif but we keep an eye on it and replace with NEW OEM parts.

Anyway we didn't make that modification because it does not say you can modify the linkage from factory... IE: no alternate bushings and no short shift kits!!!

Same with the VWs. To be really scrupulous, those heat shields must be part of the "free" exhaust, methinks.
