I have a Saturn SC2 about half complete. My plan had been to rebuild the struts, install stiffer springs etc camber plates in the front and slot the knuckles in the rear. So why is SPS suggesting a coil over package? Can I use a coilover with a fixed seat? A coilover is a lot more expensive If that is what it takes, then we'll have to bite the bullet. Is it legal?

Here's a picture of one of the strut assemblies I made for Norm Floyds MR2. The insert is an Advance Design from Ground Control.

James:

Congratulations on choosing a Saturn. You're one of about 6 that are racing them throughout the country.

Shoot me an e-mail directly at the address below and I'll be more than happy to help you out.

BTW, you can't slot the lower knuckle in the rear, except on the strut as shown in the FSMs. Coilovers are the better choice, and you can run camber plates in the rear (makes setup even easier).

I guess I never really explained why the coilovers were the better choice, eh?

First off: my race car is a 92 SL2. I happened to be in the right spot at the right time and picked up a set of the Koni DA struts with the coilover adapters (if you want to know more details, please e-mail me. I'm not certain I should broadcast all the details).

The reason the coilovers are recommended is for chassis setup. Being able to adjust the spring perch will let you adjust the corner weights of the car and help you tune the suspension more easily. Obviously, if your shock are also adjustable, this gives even more tuning capabilities.

Unfortunately, Koni doesn't make a strut for our cars. There are coilover kits, including the housings from Ground Effect (or is it Control, I don't remember) as well as Carrera. Neither of these are a perfect fit and each has their own special frustrations.

The KYB struts and H&R springs are OK, but if you go with the H&R race springs, the KYBs will be over-powered by the springs. I've personally run with the H&R sports and KYB struts on track and thought it was OK, but it was nowhere near the fast solution. These are now on my daily driver (93 SL2).

I'll try to take a look at my Koni's tonight to see if there is a model/part number on them. I'm fairly confident that these are off the shelf units, but I've never really bothered to look to see for certain. If you'd like pictures of that setup, just shoot me an e-mail and I'll send them along to you.

Since this seems to be a Saturn post.... there is a 4 door early style with "make offer, no engine" near my house. Email if you need contact info and I'll pass it along. I live 25 miles south of Milw, WI. Blazin by it looked otherwise straight. Did not stop and take a close look though. There was not any rust on the body though. ;-)
